I've got another question about the fuel plate, is it worth it to mess with the stock one(Sliding it forward) or is it best to just buy one from say tst! This is the first post and first Diesel.

Thanks, Jim

The stock plate will get you more power, but the egts are a bit much at full slide. I wouldn't do anything with out a set of guages. By the way, welcome. If there is a question about the Dodge Cummins, this is the place. Weather you want a correct answere or not is still in the air. :D

Just try sliding the stock plate. Play with it. This is the only way you will know for sure, slide the stock plate then try a tst plate and see what you like. Your trans will not take much if any more power than stock with your current pressures. Go to dieseltrans.com for info on how to improve pressure. But the best way is to call Bill Kondolay at DTT 604 504-4002. He can answer all your questions. Have fun with it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome

I'm with DBCooper, get the guages before you do anything else. I had my stock plate slid forward and enjoyed the extra power, but with the #5 TST plate there is no comparison on power. If I'm not mistaken though with your truck the EGT's can get pretty high with the stock plate slid forward. Have you adjusted your star wheel yet ? I really noticed the difference on the bottom end with that alone, not to mention that nice puffof smoke ya' get when ya' step on it under boost.

Thanks for the info!

I haven't done a thing to it till today, the converter fell off so I fixed that... . sounds better. I bought this truck last week and I'm just looking at the options, I'll check the plate out as you'll said and get some guages.

New blood strikes again. From reading the threads on this subject, it sounds as though the star wheel on the stock units should be adjusted. How much should it be adjusted? I have a 95 w/auto. Thanks

Sliding the plate

You should be OK to slide the plate forwards,I have done quite a few with no problems. If you do,I would recommend marking the location of the original plate if you want to go back,or install a different plate later on.

If you do slide the plate forward,I would leave the AFC housing in it's original location, and just crank the star wheel 20-30 clicks towards the engine, until you just get a light haze on accel. This will give you good low end without sacrificing fuel economy. If you install a plate,or start doing other mods, then you can move the AFC if neccessary. If you don't want to do the plate now,you can still adjust the star wheel for the low end.

Here are all the details on how to replace the plate, same idea, except you just want to slide your original one forward.

I would still recommend gauges, but you can play with the stock plate for now. Just avoid long hard pulls with your foot to the floor to be safe until you can get the gauges in.

The gain with moving the plate is much less than with using a TST plate. If you decide to move it, mark the original position so you can find it again. With the TST plate, you should use the stock position so the fueling increase is correct over stock. With the 215 hp engine, you will quickly get into egt problems at higher rpm with sustained load. Therefore, with that engine, you should go with the TST plate right away because it increases fueling vs. rpm a safe amount. Moving the plate increases fuel vs. rpm the same at all rpms. With your automatic trans engine's pump, I believe you will find moving the plate doesn't give a good enough increase to be worth the trouble.

Listen to Joe.

He's been saying for years that you can get into EGT trouble with sliding the stock camplate, but he never puts any numbers to it.

Here's what I found. 1997 3500 5-speed. Stock camplate slid forward and high idle screw adjusted in.

Heavy pulling under 2400 rpm EGT 1100-1150°F. No problem.

But, racing through the gears or pull the RPM past 2500 and EGT will climb to 1500°F fast! I can get to 1400° in approximately 4-5 seconds above 2500 rpm.

Take that into consideration.
