Another fuel pressure guage question

I'm in the proccess of installing my fuel pressure guage sender. I using Ray's banjo bolts and am planning on mounting a grease gun hose to the bottom of the fuel filter.



My question is how do you get at the bottom of the fuel filter housing? The only way I can determine is to disconnect the fuel filter housing from the block and work with it outside of the engine compartment.



Is this the best way?
 
I did mine from under the truck, using the Braille method. Make up your 90* 1/8" NPT elbow into the banjo bolt before installing it. It's not easy, but it can be done. It helps to have a second set of eyeballs guiding you from above to get started. Watch those banjo bolt washers (well, not actually watch. since you can't see 'em from underneath!) ;)

Ditto on Rusty's post, except I did mine from the top, never removed the fuel filter canister. It's tight and an extra set of eyes peering through the front wheel fenderwell will help. I didn't have that luxury and managed just fine, take your time and set up the FP sender prior to the install.

I was without the luxury of an extra set of eyes and did mine solo from the top so it can be done. I'm 6'3" so that helps but I still got my hands a little cut up as it can be a tight fit but is alot better to do it on the truck than removing the filter canister. Only takes 5 minutes to do it and you don't have to worry about fuel coming out of the canister when you remove the banjo fitting on the bottom of the filter housing as only a little bit will drip out, this was my main concern until I did it.

I'm getting ready to install one also and was wondering if it could be installed at the schrader valve going into the injector pump? It's a whole lot more accessable.
 
I attached the grease gun hose to the banjo bolt first. Then installed the banjo bolt into the filter housing. Did it from the top. Lot easier than changing the oil filter. .
 
I attached mine to the banjo first, then screwed the assembly into the fuel filter housing from underneath the truck. PLEASE WEAR SAFETY GLASSES when doing it from under the truck. You want to continue to have a clear view of the powerstrokes in your REAR view mirror:D :D :D
 
Cowman - yes you can install it on the schrader valve coming off the VP44. The problem with that location is that your readings will pulse my +/-2 psi. Moving the sensor to the bottom of the filter has reduced this pulsing quite a bit.





I pulled my filter off the truck to do it, but I was doing more than just installing a pressure sensor. I replaced everyting from the VP44 to the tank with SS fuel lines and moved my pump.

I ended up taking the fuel filter housing off. It wasn't too bad.



The problem I have now is the guage is pegged to the right (high pressure?)



Initially the guage was reading 8 - 10 psi. When I started the truck to go out that evening , I notice the guage was pegged on the high side. It jumps to that position as soon as I turn the truck on and stays there (it does flutter a bit under high acceleration by never drops)



Anyone have this happen with a stock fuel system with 45k miles?

I installed my Westach gauge sender off the VP44 using a 3' piece of fuel hose with fittings on the ends. Has worked great, without pulsing, for several thousand miles... ;)
 
Check the Grounds

Check to make sure you have a good ground on the gauge as well as the sending unit. My setup, SW gauge and sending unit, requires, at least on my installation, a ground for the sending unit and a ground on the back of the gauge.

Check out the Autometer gauges at www.smokindiesel.com and you'll see the setup with the sending unit mounted in the engine compartment to keep the fuel out of the cab, haven't done mine yet but from reading posts it looks like it's important to mount the sending unit AWAY from the VP44 to eliminate the 'pulsing' which causes the guage to fluctuate?

Remove fender well

I have removed the plastic fender well on the rear to install a fifth wheel hitch on the frame. To reinstall I purchased some plastic rivets at the hardware store. this made easy access to the frame. Has anyone suggested or tried removing the front fender well to access the filter area ?.
