I was robbing parts off of the W250 that I have and needed to remove some pieces from the crossmember at the transmission so I thought I would take the transfer case and trans out. I had a sale for the trans but I wanted to take off the filter I put on. When I removed the filter to put the pto cover back on I found a larger chunk of gear on the magnet. Then when I looked inside I saw part of two teeth missing from the gear at the front of the main shaft. The trans only has 50,000 miles on it with a $4500 rebuild job. I wish the guy would have put a NV4500 in. I had the transmission sold for $1500. Now what is it worth. It still worked ok before it was parked. Too much torque I guess or bad gear. Interesting story. This W350 I have is quite the adventure. Missing frame pieces, loose u-bolts, bad wiring, milky gear oil, my suprise list gets longer everyday. If I didn't have the parts truck I would be broke. I paid $2500 for my parts truck and with my labor this old beast is getting awful expensive. Its good I work for free.

Depends on what it needs. If you get the Getrag section from someone, and take it apart, chances are I'll have extras of the part(s) you need.

I have an offer for a "possibly needs rebuilt" transmission for $500 plus shipping.

I'm surprised you had a used transmission sold for that much. Of course, I guess not every one is as cheap as I am.

I had it sold to a friend of my brother's who has a truck with no first gear who just wanted a simple swap in and out. It was going to be cheaper and easier than a NV4500 conversion. The truck is not in that good of shape. I am probably as cheap but like to sell at the top of the market not the bottom.

I feel your pain. :) I bought a 92 that I had no idea how thrashed it was. It ended up having stuck 4 cylinders. It ran, had some blowby, and was gutless, but I just ran it until the HG blew. When I saw the motor internals, I found a parts truck here on TDR. Paid 3000 for it, but it was a clean 93 with 84k miles and the Getrag. I ended up disassembling both trucks and reassembling one with the best parts from each. Not cost effective at all if my time was counted, but it sure was an education.

Now I know how they are put together and my boys learned a bit in the process too. You should have seen the shock on my 16 then year old son when it actually started and ran. :-laf

I ended up rebuilding my Getrag last summer and it wasn't near as bad as I thought it was going to be. Heavy yes, but not as complicated as say rebuilding an engine. There really isn't that much in the case.
