Thanks Kevin :)

Bill,

I guess from my post one might assume that I think By-pass filters are a joke. Sorry, as this is not the case. I was simply trying to point out that a given oil analysis with a By-pass filter that has excellent wear results may be a bit skewed when it come to the real wear taking place in the engine. I think I have done this.

With that said, I think By-pass filters are excellent, and as soon as I figure out which one will suit my personal taste best, I may someday have one on my own truck, but then again maybe not. As you said, the key to oil analysis is trend analysis, and also determining if the oil is still suitable for use in an extended drain interval.

bypass filters and oil tests

I bit the bullet and bought the BMK-15 and Amsoil fluids end to end:)eek:  over $400 after shipping:eek:  ).

I still have the old oil and will have it tested and will have the amsoil setup test after 1k and 10k miles.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

As for detecting problems. . I don't think I'll worry about it. The Amsoil dealer in the next county has a customer with a 350 chevy being used as a pump drive(either a pump or generator). It has the dual bypass setup and has been running for 17000 hrs. If you average 50mph thats 340,000 mi on a small block chevy. WOW! It runs continuously at a steady state rpm. Granted that is ideal, but they have not done anything but tune ups in 17000 hrs.

Later,

Mark
