Freightliner Coronado Frame Rail Change....

I finally decided to upgrade my all around do everything and work commuter vehicle to a newer ride. The old ride was a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the high output 4.7 motor. The vehicle had 3.73 gears and would really scoot down the highway. I owned it 11 years to the day before I traded it off. This is an old picture. It didn't look this nice when I traded it off with 175k miles. Many dents, corroded rims, deer ran into the side but from a distance it didn't look bad. The dealer seemed happy to get it. I thought for sure it would go to auction. I must have spent to much time detailing it. This is an old picture when it actually looked good.

I traded for a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with 5.7 L Hemi and air suspension. The new ride has 45k miles. The underside was very clean - no rust. It was tough finding an older JGC with lower miles. People seem to keep these and run them for a long time. The vehicle has one scratch on the door but otherwise seems to be a creampuff. So far I have changed the differential fluid and engine coolant and started to fill cavities with fluid film. I will be installing splash guards and changing the transmission and transfer case fluids soon. The transmission in the 2012 is the 65 RFE which is a software change from the 545 RFE in the 2002. The good thing is its the "devil I know" sort of thing and these are easy to maintain. The same filters fit this transmission as the 68 RFE in my pickup truck.
I know its not a new one but I hope to get quit a few years/miles from this one. The dealer I purchased this one from was in Louisville, KY. Cross Chrysler Jeep is a smaller family owned dealership. They kept some interesting vehicles around. One of them was a late 50's Jeep station wagon. My dad owned one of these back in the day. Having small talk with the salesman he said both new and used vehicles seem to be really selling right now. Interesting since unemployment is higher these days.
Now for the bad news - once my wife saw this vehicle I immediately got demoted to driving her Nissan Rogue back/forth to work. The Nissan got kicked out of the garage so the Jeep and the Dodge pickup stay in the garage.

Thats a nice find, my wife has a 2012 GC but the 3.6 and its been great, currently around 140k and the only repair was the Transmission cooler / AC condenser unit sprung a leak around 10k ago and had to be replaced but other then that just regular maintenance and keeps on going.

Nice, I've the sibling of it, 2012 Durango. Very nice ride.
Read the owners manual thoroughly because it has a lot of hidden easter eggs in it that otherwise you'll never find.

Nice find! Someone took care of it. Low miles for sure! Enjoy! The best part is you didn't spend $45K for it.

Excellent choice. There’s a reason this variant is still being built.
Sorry you got stuck with a Rogue. It dont have a CVT, does it?

When we ordered our '20, it was supposed to be the last model year for this generation(WK2), to be replaced by the new WL. I am reading now that the WL is delayed, and there will be a run of '21 WK2s.

One of my favorite vehicles we’ve owned was a ‘95 GC with the 4.0. I know, it’s not as new as what we’re talking about here, but it was a great ride. There was nowhere it couldn’t go, had plenty of room, comfortable, and that 4.0 is the closest thing to our beloved Cummins you can get in a gasser. You just can’t kill it. Wish I still had it, but the wife wanted a Tahoe....

The city had a lot of 4.0 XJ’s. They were great, except they’d set a misfire code because the fuel would boil in the fuel rail from idling all day.

I still miss the old XJ's. Great vehicles.

My wife had a '96 Grand Cherokee with the old 318. Nice vehicle but unfortunately had electrical issues and finally caught fire. My sister has a 2019 GC Trailhawk with the 5.7L Hemi. It is a very nice ride and just about goes anywhere you would willingly want to put it.

I'm afraid it does have a Cvt. I have been warned to stay on top of the maintenance for the Cvt. I will have to take it to a shop for Cvt maintenance. Apparently you have to have it hooked to a computer to let you know there is enough oil in the transmission in conjunction with the temperature of the oil/Cvt. I believe I can do the other driveline oils myself. There is a reputable transmission shop a few short miles from home.
