Blew a head gasket on mine the other day. I thought that I would have the KDP fixed while it was apart. @ 240 K it was out and gone. I got lucky no damage. The mechanic that done mine just put loctite on the case bolts and retorqued. He left the KDP out and filled the hole with silicone. I think I would have rather had the pin back in place and tabbed? He had it back together before I knew what he had done. Do you all think that this will come back to haunt me? Has anyone just left the pin out? Mine is a 96 model 3500 stock work truck with a 4in exhaust. I have goodies to install, waiting to replace the clutch.

The dowell pin is in there for a reason. It keeps the gear case precisly located and prevents movement from causing a gasket leak. The gear case supports the injection pump so any movement is not a good idea. Filling the hole with silicone was kind of dumb. The hole is a blind hole.

Thats the way I had it figured. Thanks for confirming. I wished that I had known what the mechanic was doing before he put it back together. I guess at this point it will be alright untill a leak starts? I really hate to go into it. But I guess like they say if want something done right do it your self. I assumed that this guy knew what he was doing.

Thanks again for the reply.

Nice thing about it just being done is it will come apart easier. It bites you have to redo someone elses work, but you'll know it's done right.

The dowel pin locates the injection pump gear relative to the cam gear. The pump is on the gear case and the cam gear is located by the block, so you don't want the gear case to move at all. It can squirm around on the gasket otherwise, and the gasket can creep out of position and cause an oil leak. You should put in a new dowel pin, Cummins #3900257 with green or red loctite after spray cleaning the hole. Then tab the pin to be sure it can't come out. Cummins sells a tab for this purpose.

It would be very much the exception if the pin came out and did no damage to the gear case. Typically the pin rides on the gears for a while and can crack the case near the fan hub or at the top above the pump gear. Spray clean the case and check very carefully for cracks. The case needs to be intact for strength.

JeffLight,

Make the mechanic redo the dowl pin. It is not your fault that he did not follow proper procedures as outlined in the maintenance manual. (unless he used Mickey Mouse's maintenance manual) Did you get the new gear case when you redid the case? I used loctite 680 which is super strong and some of the strongest that they make and my pin has moved out against the shoulder of the case. Glad that I put the new case on or else I would be doing another KDP.

Thanks everyone for the replies. Very helpful. I think that I will have a talk with the mechanic. Really he should make it right. I also had to redo the thermostat. The temps were swinging real bad. When I removed the thermostat housing the the thermostat was installed backwards. I just hope that the head gasket holds and was torqued proper. Thanks again.

How the hell do you install the T Stat backwards? Yeah it's possible, but **** son... the thing does says TOP right on it.

Maybe mechanic was having a bad day or something...
