Hey guys, I've been layin in the weeds here for a while now, figured I might as well engage. I think this is by far the best forum on the TDR with great folks and info. I've owned a couple of normally aspirated ford 7. 3's over the years but came to my senses in 99 when I bought a brand spanking new 98 215 hp 5 spd. dodge. Earlier this year, I found a relatively well maintained 91. 5 W-250 5spd. ( sorry, no auto-tragics for me ) to replace my 69 ford f-100 work truck that I've driven for the last 29 years. My 98 dodge 215 hp is great and I'm sure I'll keep it (probably indefinitely), but I find myself always driving my 1st gen instead ! I can't help it, I think I just relate better to its old school design. After all, I have been referred to as a dinosaur more than once. Looking forward to future correspondence. Kenny

Welcome to the pack. I'm with you on the auto-tragic. Wish mine had five gears, but it will soon, maybe six, not sure yet. But it will have to wait till the shop gets built. Can't wait.

Kenny,

Welcome. I agree about the 1st gen school of thought, but then it HAS been mentioned that we have little to no thought process here @ Our Lady's asylum.

The only thing wrong with the auto is... ... ... ... ... ... ...

Can't think of any off hand :)

BTW, them standards ain't called the Gutbag transmission fo' nutt'n

Welcome aboard mate.

Still have my 70 Ford one ton but don't drive it now. All my driving is in a Dodge. I have Getrags and automatics but no fwd. I may have to get one so I can run with the fwd crowd. Given equal attention, I believe that you can get equal service from either transmission in the twd world but there seems to be concensus that the fwd will impose more load than the Getrag will stand over time. Yet I am still convinced that the Getrag will go the course if maintained. Since you have been lurking for a while, you know that the after market folks have pretty much beefed the automatics to the point that they will definitely go the course. If you go past the point of capacity on the Getrag with bombs, you can expect trouble. There are no upgrades to the Getrag.

But hey!!! This the place to solve any issue on the first gens. The colective knowledge of the group is overwhelming.

how's it going K2 - good to have you aboard. Cool things about the funny farm in here is that anything you can think of that you either want to do or can think of doing probably either has been done or is in-work in someones garage or mind. I think 2005 will be a very interesting year for a lot of 1st genners - lots of crazy projects going on out there - should make for some good reading!

Welcome aboard, k2. I am with you on the manuals- dont care for slushboxes. The one sitting in the driveway cured me of ever wanting another stock auto. And for the $3-4K to beef an auto, I can get an Eaton 6 or 7 speed, and still keep it in the appropriate gear, unlike an auto, which seems to have the credo of "get to high gear ASAP; downshift when I dont need to; stay in OD when I need to downshift. "

GL- my main issue with the autos is the TPS- Mom's ate 4 of them the 40K I had it, a then- Dodge only item for $200 a pop. Now they are $140 at O'Reilleys with a lifetime warranty, but it is still a PITA when you drop into 3rd at 70-80mph, and have to go 60 for the rest of the way.

I had my speed sensor drop off while on Vacation when driving through the battle field @ Shilo. NO , not "during" the battle, gezzzz  I drove to a Dodge dealer and changed out my speed sensor. . got my OD working again.

The TPS can be by-passed if one so chooses. Ya have to be creative. I like my trannyu to git up to OD just as fast as possible when on the open road and unloaded. I can adjust it to shift at various points by truning it. To heck with the factory setting. (They think the engine is only rated @ 160 hp) :-laf

You can take the TPS apart and clean it . I have never bought a new one in over 200,000 miles. There is a write up about this in one of the early TDR

I got ont that wasn't working right from a Dodge mechanic and cleaned it so always have one ready to go.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys, oh and nothing personal about the auto trannys, I just prefer as many manual controls on my machines as possible. The other reason I like manuals is that I like to be able to work on / rebuild most of my "stuff", and brain just doesn't function at a high enough level to deal the auto trannys. Oh yeah and Pastor Bob, is communion being offered at the late night benediction at Our lady of acceleration Church :p ? I hope so! Anyway, thanks again and " Viva la 1st gens "! K2
