I just bought a 96 Dodge Standard cab, 4X4, longbed, 5spd, no muffler, silencer ring removed, with the pump worked on. I have no idea what the HP or Torque is.

I've done a fair amount of work on international 7. 3's 6. 9's 9. 0's and DT466's but never on the cummins and I never have hopped up a diesel.

How can I tell what has been done to my pump/injectors? Are there any markings on the outside that indicate anything? No, I never took a pump apart before - just replaced them.

After reading some posts about the 5spd problems, now I'm a bit concerned. I know the 5th speed nut has been replaced - anything I can do to help with life besides change the fluid?

If there is some good reading on these subjects either here or elsewhere, please point me in the right direction... .

Oh yea - is there an area to bring be up to speed on all the acronyms?? Such as what is the TST, DTT TC/VB, etc.

What causes exhaust temp to be elevated, etc...

Thanks!

Dan

You could remove the cover that is on top near the rear of the pump to check the torque plate (throttle stop). If it has a large number and no rivet heads then it is probably a TST plate. The number will tell you which one it is. If it has two rivet heads then it is probably a stock plate. The two screws that hold it in should be in the middle of the slots. The stock plate may have been pushed forward for more power.

The instructions for installing a TST plate are at the following URL. That will give you the necessary info to get to it so you can check to see if it's stock.

DTT is Diesel Transmission Technology and TST in TSTproducts is Truck Sweet Truck. VB is valve body, TC is torque converter, and TCC is torque converter clutch. First BOMB (Better Off Modified, Baby) gaget is an EGT (Exhaust Gas Temp) gage to avoid meltdown from pouring too much fuel to it at the wrong time (eg, lugging).

Another tell-tale sign your if pump hasn't been bombed is if the tamper proof screws or paint hasn't been removed/broken.

And the fifth gear nut problem can best be minimised by not running 5th gear at less than 1750 RPM.

I am (on) the original nut in my 98. 5 w/85K miles. ;)

Like someone said. Check the pump screws for marks and tamper proof screws.

I would not worry about 5th gear. If it comes off again it rarely causes damage. If it does there are better fixes now that are more permenant.

Enjoy the truck and runer hard!

You should check the plate anyway. If the TST kit was put in with the included break off screw and a little paint was used for touch up afterwards, it hard to tell that it's been opened.
