Always hated it when I got to the end of a project and had one bolt left over... This time however... it was a good thing.

Got the KDP-Killer washer put on the KDP. Nothing super hard about it, just time consuming. The pin was sticking out about 1/4 of an inch. Drove it back in and installed the washer and longer bolt.

As I was going around tightening everything else, I found these pins behind the upper gear... instead of the expected bolts????

Then, just incase my wife sells this truck while I'm not around... the next owner will know.

its funny ya'll say its so bad and i belive you for the most part but after 200,000 miles on a 94 ctd that we bought new im starting to think that its not every dodge that has it happen and its been blown up a bit to how bad it is or we are really lucky and got one that fit right and hasn't moved.

I was thinking the same thing mine had 290k and I didnt have any problems either~

As vehichle forums go most people come to them for help with a problem. So you see a number of people that have the problems. The numbers are aggravated since the ratio between members and the members with problems seems very high. Reality sets in and the problems are actually a small percentage of the total number of vehicles manufactured. Overblown? Probably, but for the small price and some labor to get it done, why take the chance? Tabbed mine at 176k. Had not moved at all. Still gives me peace of mind.

mine hadn't been done at 307k miles when i checked but the cover had been off as shown by all of the gorilla snot i had to clean off the cover and case, so it may of been hammered back in as it was only out a 1/16 or so

Mine was out about 1/8" when done at 353,000. I removed and loctited EVERY bolt within the timing cover that I could get to no matter what it was. I found most of them very loose.

I went with the rationalization of, $45 in parts and 5 hours of getting personal with my truck (it did take away time from the Commando though)... or $1200-$1500 in parts to fix the pin if it does drop... Money and time well spent (isn't all wrenching time well spent anyway?).

Those other "pins" you found are casting bosses when the alum. was poured into the mold.

The bolts that are difficult are behind the cam gear. Bottom line you arrested a potential problem, that happens even at high mileage. I've pulled pins that were only IN the housing about 1/16=1/8, with small pliers then driven them back in and jigged or tabbed. Even though it may only be out a little it might eventually come out.

Good Luck

Andy

Congrats on the catch! I just spent a few hours last week and caught the pin sticking out about 2mm. A friend of mine who waited a little to long and was bitten gave me a hand, his rig had 150k on it this last fall when it happened. My rig just past 150k. His experience was very handy to have around. We went ahead and timed the motor to 15. 5 and added delivery valves while we where at it.

you could have 100k miles or 500k miles... if you haven't taken care of this yet, it could happen to you tomorrow.

this is one of those cases where an ounce of prevention can really save you a TON of headache!!!!!!!

took me about 2hrs to do mine, and that included a trip to the hardware store and making my own tab.

if the case breaks, the ENTIRE front of the truck has to come off, and the cam has to come out... takes a little longer than 2hrs, and the parts to fix cost more than $4

ok i want to make clear first off that yes these are forums for when you have problems so that all you ever seem to hear about second i understand its only a matter of time some before others. i also understand doing it for peace of mind i have told my mom to do it on her truck for sometime and it will be the very first thing i do when i get my 12v. it was just an observation.

i have told my mom to do it on her truck for sometime

Gee whiz, son, seems you forgotten all the pain and suffering she went through bringing you into this world and raising you up proper like. :{ Nows the time to hep her out AND gain some experience for when your 12v arrives. :D :-laf Simple enough job for someone contemplating a conversion/install.

Let's do a poll: How many would help their mom out? :D

Forrest:

You are correct on that... ... .

A friend of mine bought a beautiful 95 12 valve with only 55K on the clock from a co-worker.

I had been telling the previous owner about the KDP and he just laughed it off, telling me the truck only had 55k.

Less than 3k miles after the new owner bought the truck, oil started leaking from the busted case after the pin dropped out.

I don't recall how much the parts cost, but it was a lot more than $4 or $5 for the tab

big jake
