Sorry i know there is a million threads on this. So when you use the snap on kit and set your timing off of tdc when engine is at tdc. Your pump, once timing is advanced the pin wont be able to be inserted into the pump right?

I thought the pump pin locked the pump no matter what timing it is at? No?

AFTER advancing, the pin will still lock it, just not at TDC like his queshtion indicated. It will lock at whatever degrees you advanced the pump to.

Alright well thanks for the info i thought that was how it worked but some of the other posts on how to do it were a little confusing. Now i just have to wait for the snap on kit to get here. Thanks

Whoa... ... The timing pin will indicate the engine at TDC(regaurdless of timing), the pump will then be advanced from that point. (from stock). So if you pin the engine at TDC before you mess with timing it should come up about 12*, then once you advance timing and you roll the engine around and pin it at TDC, your pump should then read at whatever you advanced it, but the engine had better still be at TDC when the pin is in, if not, the gear was put on wrong. but I don't think you have to worry about that.

NHays,

I believe he is talking about the timing pin in the pump itself and not the pin in the gear case housing.

It will engage, just not at the same time as the engine timing pin, if the timing is advanced/retarted.

So your impression is pretty much correct.

Well right, it will engage it just won't work for holding the pump in the advanced position while pulling the gear while engine is at TDC. I sure wish you could pin the pump wherever you wanted as it would making setting timing a lot easier.

from what i understand, when you have a pump benched and set-up they can set the pin to whatever timing you like, so if you slip it just pin both and your back to 18° or whatever...

Good to know!

there is another way to set timing if you are shooting for 16. 5 and it will get you pretty darn close to that give or take + or - a decimal take the lock pin out of the pump spin motor to TDC then look in the hole with a flashlight through the driver wheel well.

Then have someone turn motor over untill the pin in the pump which looks like the end of a standard screwdriver is pointed right at the bottom of the hole you took locking pin out of.

Then take timing gear off check make sure pin hasn't moved from that spot if not move turn motor back to TDC and install the timming gear and whala you should be right about 16. 5.
