Bad Injectors/Re-flash

Well boys I think my '04 305/555 has a bad injector. Over the past few weeks I've noticed a prominent, yet intermittent tick from what I believe to be an injector. I brought it to the dealer last week but do to the problem being intermittent the SOB decided to behave for the test drive. This morning I really heard it ticking while cruising at 50 mph. It seems the loudest while "cruising", meaning just enough throttle to maintain speed. I drove right to the dealer and left the truck running while I summoned the shop foreman. Again, as we rode together it appeared to quiet down and made me look stupid. The shop foreman stated he would contact Cummins in the morning but he said that since the truck is not running rough or knocking real bad they most likely won't address it.

Just to clarify, the noise almost sounds like a bum lifter or loose rocker arm. However, under hard acceleration or upon deceleration there is no noise.

Maybe I'll just have to upgrade my injectors :D .

Well if you have an injector going bad and it is like mine, it will take a few thousand miles to get bad enough for Dodge/Star to diagnose and replace. Mine started ticking about 7000 miles. Took another 2000 or so to become knock and rough idle and then white smoke after sitting for a while. Had it finally diagnosed and replaced about 9000 miles I think.

Now at 16000 miles I think I am starting to hear the same tick/knock starting again. I hope not.

Here's an update if anyones interested. The tick turned into a pronounced knock. I went to the dealers and they did an injector shutdown test. It turns out #6 is the culprit so the dealer will call STAR and see if they will replace it. According to the DRBIII all injectors including #6 are running between 98-100% but #6 sure is loud.

Join the crowd. Mine white-smokes like a son-of-a-gun especially after idiling for a few minutes. At times there is a very pronounced pop out the tail pipe. When dealer gets it guess what..... it runs fine. I know I have injector problems but they are never around when I take it in. Mine also ticks very badly. However with 160K on the odometer I know the rack needs to be run on it. Even if the valves are fine I still need to have them adjusted.

Here's an update. I finally got my truck back last night after a weeks worth of repairs and the #6 injector sounds good. However, I may have another injector that is crapped out because the truck has another very loud tick.

It's going back Monday morning to see what's up but I am losing patience now. This truck has 19,500 miles and I have replaced upper and lower balljoints, the entire steering column, #6 injector, drivers door speaker, had a TSB performed to fix poor sound quality of my radio which did nothing, TSB for brake booster hose, and I have the 60-65mph vibration. Plus, the icing on the cake is after driving my wifes Tahoe for a week I realized just how lousy the Dodge seats are when I jumped in last night to bring it home.

I may have to give serious consideration to a crew cab GMC D-Max/Alli.

Rosco, you probably do have another injector ticking. If the tech isnt extremely clean upon re-assembly, it will get trash in another injector

Why, oh why can't I live near a dealership where someone like John Robinson or Sag2 work? :{

Rosco, do you run any fuel additives? Do you have a fueling box?

We have a new 325/600 with 15000 on it and if it sits for more than 6 hours here in colorado the thing will hardly run on start-up. Starts with tons of white smoke then changes to black smoke. . Idles really rough until warm. We had the flash, but it doesn't seem to help... Any thoughts?

mbsnow, when have you had your sensor array on the engine last checked?
There is a possibility there is one that is putting the fuel map into rich mode.
Judging from your description, I would be looking at the coolant sensor.
