Another Ram 1500 Goes Down.

The SRW vs DRW is another debate, and another one that is hard to get people on the bankwagon. I know if I had a larger 5er I would want a DRW, but then I would need 2 trucks as a DRW wont go many of the places I go hunting. So I guess I'll stick to campers that work well with a SRW.

Couple weekends ago, took the family up to the Sierras, and while on the freeway saw two crazy people towing. One guy had a Generic suv towing a big dual axle camper, which was also towing a 19' or so boat. He was going way too fast for this rig, and the boat was swaying from one side of the road to the other. I hurried to get by him, and then looked over and pointed back to the camper and boat, and he nodded his head and just kept on going. I expect he didn't make it much further.

Then on the way back I was doing 65mph in the left lane passing slower trucks in the right lane. It was raining. This dude in a Honda Civic is towing a light trailer that is carrying two kayaks and a cargo box in the right lane. He pulls out front me, making me slam on the brakes. He accelerated to 65mph and held it there a while and eventually moved back to the right lane.

I think both people were insane. When I tow, I stick to 55mph and hang out in the right lane. No sense in endangering yourself or others.

So what, back out the weight of the truck and that's what left for payload.



Look at some of the GVWRs on these new 1/2 tons and by the time you deduct passengers, accessories, gear, options, etc,etc, and that gets mighty slim on a 1/2 ton.



Bottom line is, if you feel the need to be brave and macho with your overloaded 1/2 ton you're breaking the law, and putting other peoples lives in jeopardy with your stupidity. With any luck you get in a wreck proving your super human driving skills your insurance company says DENIED on the claim due to owner neglect.

Having owned a small trucking business and having done more than my share of trailering... . It always blows my mind what and how people drive/ tow with their rigs. ST rated tires (and the ST stands for special tire) are speed rated for 70 mph I see people towing at speeds well over that all the time. Most Lt (light truck) tires are also not rated for much more than 90 mph. How much time do youy save on a long trip by driving over 70 mph? Why take the risk. I've done the Ny to Fla keys a few times now best speed with my 05 4x4 quadcab with the G56 6 speed and running 315-70-17 and the best Mpg falls right around 64 mph. That guy that passes me 10 times along the trip is always behind me when I hit the first bridge on route 1... . Slow and steady gets the job done and you get to live longer ... . Lol. Drive safe.

I've seen the 1/2 ton thing alot also. My opinion(and we all know about opinions) is a 1/2 ton is what used to be a station wagon with a box on it! Pure and simple, stability is important and if the bumper is dragging it's overloaded!!! The truck PULLS AND CONTROLS the load. Just my opinion.
