I'm getting ready to put on new tires and need some help?

Right now I have Michelin's LT265/75/16's E. I would like to go bigger, I'm looking at the BFG's A/T TA's KO LT285/75/16's D.

I do pull a 5th wheel about 6 to 8 times a year. Trailer weight is about # 10000 loaded here are a list of my questions????

1. Will there be a change in my speedometer mph & odometer if so is how much & is it worth changing the speedo gear?

2. Will it have any effect on fuel mileage?

3. I use 65psi in my Michelin's when towing and have no problem. going to BFG's load D will that be a problem towing?

4. Will I notice power loss with a 3. 54 gear?

4. Last 1 here where did you get the best price from?

Thanks

I can offer some help here...

1 - Yes, there will be a difference in speedo/odometer readings, there is about a 4-5% increase in rolling diameter from the 265's to the 285's. So add 4-5% on to your speed or odometer readings.

2 - It really shouldn't have much effect at all. You may even get slightly better mileage from the decrease in rpms at the same speed.

3 - not too sure about this one. You shouldn't encounter any real problems though

4 - I don't think you will notice any power loss at all, it's not too significant an increase in size.

5 - Best price? I am not sure there is a such thing under normal circumstances. I think BFG has a lock on the price of their AT's, so you may find the same price all over the place. Just check around.

In addition to what WKener said, there is no speedo gear after '97. If you wish to correct the speedo/odo, you have to use an electronic method. Abbott and TruSpeed are two such devices that do the job nicely.

2. Mileage may get a little better on the highway, but may suffer a little in town. Either way the amount will be negligeable IMO

3. There are may members that tow 10k with 285 BFG's. With the proper air pressure this shouldn't be a problem for you.

4. I didn't see in your sig if you have auto or stick. With a manual, I don't think you will notice much difference in power to the ground. With an auto your truck will spool slower and it may seem a little less responsive. You are not changing the diameter that much so I don't think you will notice much difference.

285 tires questions

I have 285 tires, manual 5 speed and 3. 5 gears and get 21-24 on the highway w/o the camper at 65 mph. The tach is just under 2000 rpm's at 65 mph indicated (not actual). A good and easy way to accurately determine your speedometer error is to use a handheld GPS and hold the speed steady at various speeds then make a little speed correction card and put it on the visor. On this TDR I have read the 285 is the biggest spare the truck will hold in the stock spare carrier. I have no desire to go back to stock tires.

Thanks for the information keep it coming.

285 tires questions

Anthony4,

The stock tires that came with my truck were 245's, the spedo/odometer error with 285's is about 9 percent. For an indicated 64 mph the truck is actually doing right at 70. Pilots understand the difference between indicated airspeed and actual or true speed so the use of a correction card or just estimating nine percent of the indicated number and adding it to get the real speed is natural.

Thanks for all the info. Bought 285's BFG's A/t's ta's awesome looks & ride great, spare tire just makes it. Can't wait till I get it in the MUD & SNOW.
