I was on the Cummins web page and saw this on anti-freeze. The link is below the Q&A.

Q:"What does antifreeze do, and what are Cummins recommendations on concentration?"

A: The primary purpose of antifreeze is to lower the freeze point of the coolant. Additional performance characteristics of coolants that are affected by the use of antifreeze include boiling point and vapor pressure. Antifreeze decreases vapor pressure which is very beneficial to the reduction of cavitation. This characteristic is the primary basis for Cummins requirements for increased SCA levels when antifreeze falls below 40 percent by volume. A 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water provides optimum boiling point and freeze point protection for engines. Antifreeze concentration in excess of 60 percent must never be used since it increases the possibility of forming cooling system gel which results as silicates precipitate out of solution. However, concentration of antifreeze less than 40 percent increases the possibility of coolant freezing and liner pitting. Therefore, Cummins recommends an antifreeze range of 40 percent to 60 percent. Fluids presently used in antifreezes are ethylene glycol (EG) and propylene glycol (PG). Diesel engine antifreezes have primarily used EG products because they are less expensive than PG products. Some antifreeze applications require less toxic substances which have driven the use of PG. Engine-related applications of PG primarily have been applications where environmental concerns have disallowed the use of the more common EG products. For more information, refer to Cummins Coolant Requirements and Maintenance, Section 7, Bulletin 3666132.

The reason I posted this is because the Fleetguard stuff is propylene glycol. For those electing to use it, this should give them peace of mind.

Is PG the red stuff? The dealer told me not to use that. Actually it was the parts "guru". I'm wondering if it is because you probably shouldn't mix the two and it's almost impossible to get all of the old coolant out when you change it.

The red anti-freeze is Texaco Havoline, I believe. The Fleetguard coolant is blue and that is what I'm using. I got 5 gallons out of my engine. I had never used PG anti-freeze prior to this change. I did not change the thermostat, but I'm going to replace it before next winter.

John -- Where did you see that Fleetguard was PG?

I used Fleetguard Complete concentrate/distilled water - mixed about -17. I don't use mine in the winter and I'd rather have the thermal efficiency in the summer. The molybdate and nitrite were both high enough at the mixture. Craig

It's listed as one of the ingredients on the container. By the way, it's also one of the ingredients listed on your favorite kind of ice cream topping. So now you know what you can do with all of that expensive coolant that you have left over. #ad

Have been putting off changing my coolant. You say Fleetgaurd is expensive? How expensive. Also will five gallons do it?

Actually, the Fleetguard Compleat is made in four different versions:

1) Ethylene Glycol concentrate

2) Ethylene Glycol premix

3) Propylene Glycol concentrate

and 4) Propylene Glycol premix

Paul, I paid $10. 13 per gallon from Cummins in Jacksonville. I would purchase six gallons since the cooling system on the truck holds that much. You will have extra for top off that way, assuming you don't get all of it into the engine and radiator. My wife mistakenly bought 8 gallons #ad
. Now I have three gallons left over for top off and ice cream. #ad

PEP BOY's auto supply has ROTELLA pre-mix
50/50 . Says it compatable with all diesels. Sells for $7. 99 per Gal. Has anyone checked this out?It should be good, made by Shell oil.

Thanks John, I did not know that a 50/50 mixture could be bought. I have always bought it full strength. Guess I don't get out much. #ad
