I need a little help! I want to change my anti freeze, but don't know what to use. I have heard that there is a differance for diesels verses gas engines. I would like to use the right stuff!!

Thanks

Hey Berg, My 01 calls for ethylene glycol, the green stuff.

My problem is that I can not get the antifreeze to drain out of the drain plug.

any ideas members? Sorry to intrude but since it is the same topic <sorta>

I just purchased a case of Rotella ELC 50/50 premix anti-freeze at my local Shell distributor. Cost about $55 for 6 gallons. I will be using it in my John Deere as well.

Fleetguard ES Compleat

Fleetguard ES Compleat at Cummins and use distilled water to mix it if you get the concentrate. Best pitting and pump protection in Diesels. If you do a search you'll get a ton of info.

Sediment collects around the drain. I think my 98 has a valve in the bottom of the radiator. If yours is the same try poking up in the outlet with a paper clip unfolded or similar. If all else fails just take the whole valve out. Be ready for the mad rush of coolant... :D

To open the valve at the bottom of the radiator you have to turn AND pull. A pair of pliers or ChanneLocks will help. As I recall, it will turn about 180 degrees. You should also remove the lower hose to flush the radiator and engine. See my article in TDR #35, pages 76-81, for more information, including photos.

If you do read that article, ignore the section about testing coolant with a voltmeter. It doesn't work.

There are lots of opinions about anti-freeze types. I use the Caterpillar Extended Life Anti-Freeze. I buy the pre-mix because it's about the same price as the concentrate plus a gallon of distilled water. This anti-freeze is good for 300,000 miles or 3 years (whichever comes first). At that point, you add the appropriate amount of Caterpillar extender and go another 3 years. After 6 years you have to change the coolant.

The reason I bought the Caterpillar coolant is because they were the only people who stocked the extender. I bought the extender at the same time.
