Help! My 93 4X4 anti-lock lite comes on and stays on "MOST" of the time. I replaced the switch on the valve next to the master cylinder(can't remember the name of it as I type this)because the top Connector broke off. This is what started my problem. I dis-connected the battery to erase fault code or whatever and that didn't work. If I start the truck two or three times in a short peroid the lite stays off, most of the time... I grounded the lead coming off the module behind the glovebox but can't get any kind of count on the flashes. They're dim if I just touch the lead and irregular if I hold the ground on the lead. I checked all componets for dry, tight, etc. and found nothing. ANY suggestions.

SAME thing happened to my '91 - I tried all the stuff you have, and my error code pointed to a bad pulse sensor in the differential. Since everything seemed to be operating normally, I unplugged the leads to the differential sensor, and plugged in a 22 ohm 2 watt resistor to the leads to substitute for the resistance of the sensor - now the dash warning lights operate normally, and I no longer have those %#@&#$ anti-lock rear brakes that I detest - they operate as "normal" brakes - much preferable in my opinion.

Just be absolutely SURE you don't REALLY have a brake problem you aren't aware of...

I had this problem with my 91 W-350. Tried to drive without anti-lock for a while, but scared myself silly trying to stop on wet or bumpy roads. Couldn't figure it out even with factory service manual. Days later I found a flow chart in the back of a Chiltons manual that explains how to troubleshoot this system. My problem also turned out to be a rear axle sensor. I could scan the flow chart if needed (about 6 pages if I remember).

Mine came on continuosly however, after reading the posts and getting some email I disconnected the thing from behind the glove box! Yeah the brakes lock in the wet, I just let off as needed. I may do some more troubleshooting if it bothers me too much this winter.

I've driven pickups most of my life, and NEVER had any problems prior to anti-lock brakes adjusting to wet or uneven roads when braking. HOWEVER, on my '91 250, with anti-lock on the rear only, wet pavement, gravel or washboard surface would IMMEDIATELY disengage the brakes on the rearend, and would NOT re-engage unless I was able to release the brake pedal and reapply - not usually able to do that when yer ALREADY on the rear bumper of the vehicle in front of you, desperately trying to get stopped with only the FRONT brakes still working!

Believe me, *I* was VERY happy to disconnect the anti-lock function, and the addition of the resistor "fools" the 'puter ino thinking all is normal, and dash warning lights function normally. NOW, wet or otherwise poor surfaces provide no "white knuckle surprises" when stopping in traffic as it did before...

Gary-KJ6Q, Sounds good to me!!! I am not a fan of anti-lock brakes either, never had them on any other truck. Describe the resistor you used and where to get one if you could, please. Thanks for the imput to all!

The connector on my '91 250 is located at the top of the differential housing, and connects to the same type of plug used in most other areas of the drivetrain. I unplugged the connector, carefully enclosed the sensor portion of the plug on the differential housing with waterproof tape in case I wanted to reuse it at a future time. 22 ohm resistors are available at places like radio shack or TV repair shops - they are VERY cheap. Once you obtain the particular resistor you are able find, simply secure it into the plug on the end of the wiring to the differential housing sensor (might take a little imagination and inventiveness to secure it solidly in the plug - but not really difficult!), then also thoroughly weatherproof that location against the elements.

THEN enjoy the predictable braking over uneven traction surfaces that were previously unavailable with the erratic action of the ABS...

Thanks for the info Gary-KJ6Q, I'm off to radio shack to get the resistor. I'll let you know how it goes.

Should have also pointed out to be sure to securely tie the wiring harness that formerly plugged into the differential up and out of the way of junk kicked up in normal travel - I used nylon wire straps on mine, and tied it up as close to the bed as possible... Any problems or questions, let me know...

Gary-KJ6Q: Well I tried the resistor and still got the lite but I did finally get a code read-out (10 flashes)which my manual indicates is wiring resistance low or some such problem. Anyway I decided to try SturgeonMike's method and now have no lite and no anti-lock. Works for me!!! Thanks to all for the input and SturgeonMike for cure!

My antilock brake lite came on, and stayed on continuosly, right after installing a freshly overhauled injector pump at 152K, approximately two years ago. I tried replacing the RAB sensor on the rear differential, but could not get the stupid light to go out. The light stayed illuminated right up until my second pump overhaul at 192K. Since I installed the second injector pump, I have not seen the light come on since ( except when starting the engine ). Now I know these two systems are completely unrelated to one another, but this has been a mystery I have yet to solve.

For what it's worth - I had a problem with the anti-lock light and brake lite coming on and it turned out to be a leaking brake booster. Replaced that and the light has stayed off since then.

Just after I bought my truck in January 1996 the lights started illuminating, same as Paccool's. If I stopped at traffic lights and held the truck with brakes rather than put it out of gear, within 5 seconds the lights would be on. Had the booster diaphragm replace, no more warning lights.

Ian,
That is exactly what mine was doing. Plus , if you really used them the assist would drop and it was a little scary getting stopped sometimes. I was in Reno when it started acting up. Drove it back home but was real careful!!!

Just so everyone will know I have replaced the booster recently and checked new one. No leak down with new booster. Lite problem remained until I disconnected the anti-lock brake module. Now,no lite and no anti-locks. Thanks again to all.
