I was looking at switches and the box suggested putting a fuse in line to protect things. Is this necessary? If so, how what amp fuse should I use?

Your description of the circuit where the switch is to be installed is lacking enough information for any of us to give you an answer other than "maybe".

How about a little more information.

Did the switch box recommend a fuse because of the switches intended use? which is power delivery. Whereas if your installing the switch to break current on a particular curcuit you do not need a fuse as the line is already fuse protected.

If you in times of need want to disable your rig, pull fuse #9, rig will crank will not start.

Is the clutch "depress to start" circuit protected?

Asssuming the switch is rated for the voltage and current it will be subjected to, a switch installed in series in an existing circuit would need no further protection.
