I have read some of the posts on what antifreeze to use or not use and need help. The Dodge owners manual for '99 says any product meeting certain ASTM standards is acceptable. On a bottle of Prestone recently used in my Jeep, it says it "exceeds" ASTM standards with protectants for aluminum.

I want this truck to last forever and don't mind the 1 hour drive to the nearest Cummins dealer if necessary to get the right stuff. Is there a difference and what is it? Thanks guys... ... ... ...

The Dodge version of the Cummins ISB can indeed use ethylene glycol-based coolants. The kicker, though, is that low silicate ethylene glycol coolant is required - don't know if the Prestone will meet that criteria. The low silicate ethylene glycol coolant I picked up at Cummins Southern Plains was a Pyroil brand - a division of Valvoline - and advertises its low silicate formulation on the label.

Rusty, Thanks for the reply. I have looked all over the Prestone label and see no mention of "low silicates". I would guess if it was, they would be braggin' on it... ..... Thanks

Hey GatorRam, one good thing about going to Cummins is you can get the Fleetguard premix. Coolant already mixed 50/50 with distilled water. I know it's a little more expensive - though not too much, but it sure makes the job eaiser!

Low Silica Antifreeze

One of the NAPA HD anti freeze products is marked low silica and Fleet. No you don't have to flush, unless you let it go for several years.

Robert at TDR (formerly Cummins Southproduct mgr. )suggested something several years ago that made sense to me. His system is to drain what you can from the radiator every year, and re-fill with fresh 50/50. Saves time and trouble and you have changed the whole system every two years. I'm on my 5th year of this method, and all my cooling systems have been clear.
