It is my understanding that all of the common rails came from the factory with Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT) anti-freeze in them. Dodge will sell you some of that at a high price, Ford also carries it but I think theirs is red instead of pink or orange. I bought a case of Zerex G-05 from NAPA it is a HOAT anti-freeze and is yellow, this is what I run in my 01 also. You will find that all the HOAT's are different colors from different manufacturers. Don't use Dexcool and don't mix anything other than a HOAT with you current anti-freeze. If you change to a different type of antifreeze make sure you flush the system extremely well.
my '03 came with the pink stuff. Ethylene glycol MS-9769 per Dodge specs which is HOAT. Interesting article in issue#54 page 156 on antifreeze/volt test procedure. Set a volt meter to 12 or 20 volt DC and hold one lead on the battery neg post and the other lead in coolent in the radiator neck without touching anything. Hold the probe for several minutes for the numbers to settle [surface charge will dissapate somewhat]. Any reading greater than 0. 3 volts indicates electrolysis [cavitation erosion] in the rad, cooling system or engine block. Mine read . 08 with 59000 miles so it looks good. The article also had Valvoline [zerex] and Peak that meets the MS 9769 spec.
28 quarts for the '03 Diesel cooling system. I just picked up 7 gallons of Cummins ES (Expended Service) Pre-Mixed coolent... I'm right at 90K miles now, replacing all hoses, belts, and fluids at 100K!
