Had a run-in with a D-Max

My thoughts on the Dodge/Cummins pairing (long).....

Being a big John Deere fan and owner i've gotten the antique tractor bug. I'm looking for either an A or B model. Antique tractors are new to me and dont know much about them except what i've read on the internet and what i've been told from talking to people at the shows and pulls. I defenitley do like the A and B models and am planning to purchase one for a winter project. Can anyone give me any pointers or suggestions on what to look for when i'm ready to buy? Thanks

Well, there are so many of these around that you won't have much trouble finding one. Try to find a later (styled) model with fairly good tires and pretty good sheet metal (straight). Some of the very late models had hydraulics which would make the tractor more desireable and increase value. Thats all I can think of now. Hope it helps.

Go to Yesterdays trractors on line at www.ytmag.com. This site has lots of info and 'Forums" on all kind of tractors.

I'm interested in "A"s and "B"s also.

I've found a 1925 model D thats in good shape but hasnt run for acouple of years and can get it for a reasonable price. If I get it I'll clean it up and get it running again. Was partially restored before, but needs paint job. Its true about boys and their toys. :D

Thanks for all the replies. Tommorow i'm supposed to go look at a Slant Dash A with Power-trol. The fellow selling it was using it about 2 yrs ago to mow one of his pastures. It has been sitting since.

:D This should be a jewell. It has Powertrol and a slant dash then it's a later model A and might have a little more power than the older A's. What is he asking for it and what does it look like?

Well I looked at the A today. Its in rough shape to say the least. He's asking $2500 which i feel is a little too high.

QRTRHRS, Thanks for the link. Lots of potentials.

What are you planning to use the tractor for? If it is just for the collection, the a or b will be just great. If you plan on using it for mowing or something else, check out the 20 series with live pto. A 420 or 520 would be a nice choice. We have a D, A, 720, 820, 2-4010, 4320 and other tractors that we love to use for different tasks. It's a fun hobby, but it's getting more expessive every year. I'll keep my eyes open for you.

Living on a hobby farm I got the antique tractor bug a few years ago. Now I have a 49JD MC a 61JD1010U, a 48 Farmall cub and my everyday work tractor is a MF65 gas. I am looking for any two cylinder JD on rubber to restore but they are hard to find in this neck of the woods. What I like about restoring tractors is there is very little chrome, upholstery, and wiring. No licensing or insurance either. Have fun with your search, that is often the best part.

Well the search continues... ... .

Today I looked at a hand start B with flat spoked wheels. Hardly any visible rust. This one has been sitting a few years also. Has been stored inside and was running when parked. Not many signs of major fluid leaks. He's asking $2,000. Maybe take a gamble and buy this one? Decisions, decisions ,decisions... ...

Here is our '47 JD "D". I tore it apart for a repaint after the photo. You should be able to find one of these in Canada. 501 cid. 2 cyl. :D

My User id should give my tractor interest away. I have a 1951 Oliver Super 88 gas. They made a diesel for this model also. Its also the reason I bought my Ram 2500. I did not have enough truck to pull this tractor on a trailer. Now I have to buy a trailer to get it on. Good luck on finding you a JD. I too would have looked at getting that brand and model, I just happened to find this one at a great price..... FREE, and yes it still runs after sitting up for nearly 30 years. Yesterday's tractor's is a good place to visit on the web. Lots of JD stuff out there

Regards

David
