My 02' would start at the blink of an eye. Got into the habit of just bumping the key and it would start. This 05 (6speed) has to crank for a good 5 seconds before it starts. (cold). Sometimes on a warmed up engine, turn it off, and try to restart in several minutes (after fueling) it takes a long time to start up. Almost has the sound of a carbed gasser that is flooded.

My 03 sometimes has a intermittent long crank, but I it has only done it since I installed the TST Powermax box. When it does start though I usually see a puff of black smoke, does seem to be more prevalent when warmed up, although it has done it on first start of the day too.

As to the question does it hurt it.

Not that I can tell. The second gens were ed for minutes sometimes when they ran out of fuel, or especially if the pump was changed. The worst part was when the idiot grabbed the "starting aid" after ing it for a couple of minutes!

More than anything it seems to be an annoyance.

I'm not concerned about it at all. What I am concerned about are those darn GSA's doing what they are doing, sag2 any ideas?? Sorry to stray here but... .

Sag2,

Mine has done that once in 5900 miles. Always starts up just fine, but this one time it wouldn't fire in ~4-5 sec. Naturally, I was on vacation, far from home. Just pulled into a service station to fill up. When to start it in front of a few admirers and it wouldn't fire! Tried again and it started right up. Drove home all the way thinking it would leave me stranded, but didn't miss a beat. 6 speed NVG, no DMF.

Mine is an '05 automatic with less than 1K on it and it always takes about 3-5 seconds to start. Maybe Cummins bought a battery company!

Hmm... Maybe the title should be changed from:

Any 05's with intermittent long crank?

to:

Any 05's without intermittent long crank?

as many people have experienced this.

My 05 takes up to 3 seconds sometimes but like the others only every 1 out of 5 times or so. Sure isnt like the first gen. 12 valves my father in laws, all you have to do is bump the starter and its off and running.

My 03 does have the long crank. I now wait for the lift pump to build pressure and then start the truck, I have not had a problem since. Could the problem be that the lift pump/ filter not keeping enough fuel ready so it has to build the pressure back up and that causes the long crank?

05, G56 here. This is what I have learned, the long crank seems to be more persistent after taking a short trip, shutting off, then restarting a few minutes later. When it happens it will crank more than 10 seconds to start. I counted. At 15 I stopped trying, second try it will start right up. What I have learned is that if it does start in 2 seconds, then stop cranking and try again, it will always start the second time. Weird, but not something I was going to take it to dealer for.

I've had the same problem with my truck and it started doing it after about 4 or 5 thousand miles. I had to take it to the dealership for some A/C work and i had them look at it and they said of course that it was normal and no codes came up sayin that there was a problem but who knows.

Same here. Happened to me twice today. Just cranks and cranks and nothing. Has me worried.

The 05 does not start as quick as the 01 does. Some times on the 05, I will turn the key like normal, hold for 1 or 2 seconds, and it will not start right away. I have to crank it over again and hold it for 4 to 5 seconds. This just seems to be if the engine is hot. No problem cranking anything, other than the truck :D :D :D

Mine does it, maybe once every 2-3 weeks. Never really worried about it because it always fired immediately thereafter. Figured it was the nature of the beast.

My 2005 CTD has had the long crank issue from time to time. I'd agree that short trips seem to bring out the slow start effect. My dealer report no problem found last time I mentioned it.

i also have the extreme long crank, i am going to try the rokktek crank sensor, and i am going to change the fuel control actuator, and if that doesnt do it, then i will change the cp3 and the injectors, truck used to start right up, but it keeps getting worse, and of course i will try it without the boxes, i keep getting the 0336, 0606 codes, but it is the same codes the tst always throws, i am changing the fca because it might be hanging up and not letting fuel into the cp3, it is embarrASSing starting a 500+ horse truck and it doesnt start, the first, second, and sometimes 3rd try, long crank, like 10 seconds at a time, i am going to smoke a starter at this rate, very frustrating #@$%!

Gee, imagine that !!

My '05 does this too. I've found that it only does it after being on the highway for long trips, say over 1hr or so. Pull into a rest stop or to fill up and it does this every time without fail. Takes between 5 and 10sec to start or starts upon second try. I watched my fuel pressure while it isn't starting and it's fine. Stock '05, no fuel mods. Done this since day one.

My '03 never did this at all, ever.

Took me about 7-8 seconds cranking this morning in 66 degrees to get it started. I'm going to the dealer tomorrow to look at my clutch popping issue and I'll see what they say about the long crank.
