I am curious if any 2nd gen auto owners out there have swapped to 3. 73 gears? If so, what rpm are you running at 65 or 70 mph. I have 4. 10's now and want to drop the rpm some without dogging the truck out while pulling in the hills. The 3. 73 option sounds like it might be the best compromise. Also, I have two rear ends to work with. Does anyone know if it is easier/cheaper to go from 4. 10 to 3. 73 or to go 3. 54 to 3. 73? Thanks.

Would like to know a source for compatible 3. 73's. Dodge offers only 3. 54 and that's too much of a jump from 4. 10 and still do medium towing. Thanks-- S. White

some 3. 73 were made in the early ninetys by spicer . I saw it in a 2500 and read it for myself on the sticker under the hood.

I had my 3. 73's installed in Phoenix at a shop on Grand Avenue. Real difference is better acceleration from stop with my 5er. After having the computer corrected for 3. 73 I am running 66mph at 2000 rpm, down from 70 at 2000. Total cost was about $1200. Gas mileage remained identical loaded, up about 2% unloaded. For me, 3. 73 was an excellent compromise.

I went with Yukon 3. 73 gears. Dealer installed them for me and even commented on how nice the Yukon gears are. I am 2000rpm@72mph and 2050rpm@75mph, which is right on with the gear calculators. Mileage is up for me as well 1-1. 5mpg, more take off power w/5er. Overall driveablility is much better IMO.

When comparing to 3. 54's, the 3. 73's add 100 rpm, 3. 92's add 200 rpm and 4. 10 add 300 rpm.

I'd do it again, it's not cheap if you don't do it yourself, but worth it for ME. The cost is the same either way your going, up or down, as nothing changes just the gears, i. e. no carrier change needed.

Hope this helps.
