New Smarty or TST???

Hey I've read lots of stories about the Smarty in autos and how they have amazing amounts of power and can light the tires up from about 10 feet past a dead stop and keep it going until 3rd gear and can hit 122mph with ease. That's expected since my 99 DTT auto with comp box ran 14. 7 all day. I know Autos kick some major a#%, but I bought a 6 speed to keep me from spending $6K on another auto and keep me from racing anyone who looked twice at me.

So now I want to hear what you Maunal owners think of the Smarty?

Can you go into detail like the other threds, instead of "yeah its nice"

Thanks :)

I don't think anyone's reports will cure your skepticism, but indeed it is a great addition to my truck. I have a laggy 66mm turbo, and it sure helps it spool quick. I think my favorite settings are 30hp w/ timing and 60hp w/ timing. Add in a little TST duration for some real power!

Bogging the truck on level 8 or 9 is just hilarious. Smokes like an overfueled 12-valve, at least until the turbo lights. No smoke on-boost.

I used a buddy's Tom-Tom Navi today to calibrate my speedo for BFG 315's via the Smarty. It turned out to be 33. 5" to make it dead-on at 70.

The Smarty makes the Bully Dog Triple dog look like a joke! The 30hp setting blows away the BDDL 113hp setting, at least in normal driving throttle application. Overall acceleration will be determined by the program you load.

It seems the Smarty cleared a code the BDDL set and would never clear, the P0633 "skim key not in pcm".

It's worth the money. If you factor in the $$ it costs to get your ABS computer recalibrated for bigger tires (usually 1hr shop rate around here, about $110) it really doesn't cost all that much more than the Bully Dog, and this module won't void your warranty.

If you're ever down here, shoot me a pm and you can give mine a try.

It takes some diffrent driving charachteristics to get used to since the throttle is VERY TOUCHY! and its easy to make the truck jump around a bit. But after a few days of learing how the smarty fuels its a wonder how I drove a truck without it! I think it shines more on a manual than an auto for day to day driving since you can recover boost better after a shift. Its the closest thing to a blown big block HEMI a diesel can get to in regaurds to throttle response in my book. I am still amazed on how my truck sounds, runs, and drives! I think I have found my favorite settings of #3 (60 HP with timing) TST 5/1, and EZ 1. Smoke control is manageable but I can still completely black out an inersection like a hot rod 12V.

off topic

But TOM TOM rocks  Marco brought his over from verona and tom tom was very impressive indeed.

It knew more backroads across indiana and made the garmon look like a toy :-laf

So, EdgeEZ, is this needed anymore?

I figure I sell my Juice and EZ and attitude a-pillar combo for a smarty and guages, and drop in a tst later when I get a turbo or something.

I would definitely not sell my EZ! Smarty does not add pressure, I tried my truck with and without, it's better with :)

THANKS!!

Ohh wait... sorry, misunderstood ya. :-laf

One quick question - Will my grey sentry key (the one with the chip) still operate as designed with the smarty uploaded?

I just got back from delivering a 40' King of the Road from York,Ne. to Mcdonough, Ga. ,1135mi. weighed 26K+ #, trk. weighs 10,100 full of fuel(165gal. ) and me, 200#. Ran all the way with the Smarty on #2, and it pulls great! Never got out of 6th on any hills, and there are some pretty good pulls bet. KC and St. Louis, had to feather the pedal a little to control egt. s, cause it would gain speed and egt. s if I didn't. Going up Mt. Eagle, its not marked, but I'm sure its 6 to 7% grade and 55mph limit, hit the bottom at 60mph in 5th, had to slow down a few times for trk. traffic, but didn't get out of 5th, topped it at 63mph and 1150 egt. s and 221* water temp. The Smarty works much better than the Juice/att. and BDDL.

I didn't get to play any because it was a sold unit, and had to be at dlr. Mon. morn. , so didn't have time.

On the way back I had the Smarty on #1, ran 68 to 72mph and averaged 19. 92 mpg. thats with a lot of stop and go driving. I'm usually not rushed, so next trip I'll try some other settings. Bob told me I should have set the Smarty on #3, and would have had less egt. s.

It smokes more than I like in 1st. and 2nd. taking off loaded, but I think I was not used to the quick take off, will have to learn to feather the go pedal a little.

Bob, did you find out from Marco how to use the fast idle?

The Smarty works great, I couldn't be more satisfied with it!!

Hey yogi,

In order to climb thoes grades were you WOT in 5th, balls to the wall at 3K, and holding steady and no able to accelerate?

Or did it pull great and have power in reserve?

Was your water temp an issue before the Smarty?

I think you should of been on at least #3 with that kind of weight

Next time you pull that heavy crank it up and see what happens, if it get too toasty turn it down at the next stop.

BigDan,

I was running about 24 or 2500 rpm at 60, and had plenty more pulling power, but the speed limit was 55. I never even tried so see how many rpm it would pull.

I've seen as high as 230* before the Smarty. Like I said, the next trip I will try different settings.

For what I do, I would never need anything more than the Smarty. I have had water temp issues for about 4 mo. now, I think I have a head gasket problem.

John, at Floor It Diesel has some Don M injectors, BD intercooler, and a head gasket for me, I may go with a cam also. I have 270K on the trk. , and I think I'm ready for new injectors, even tho it runs good, and uses no oil, just a little preventive maint.

I have an Edge w/Att. now. My question is whether the Smarty a better unit as a stand alone improvement compared to the Edge? I don't know much about the Smarty, would it be better to have both or remove the Edge and relpce it with the Smarty. So far I have original clutch and minor improvements an about 16k miles on the truck, don't pull very often but that could change. I have tried the Edge on all different settings and never really noticed any fuel improvements, would I with the Smarty?

Larry, unless I'm missing it, I can't find in your sig what air in-take/filter setup you have... I'm curious. thanks

Aired up the tires and drove the "puller" to work today. Edge EZ on 3, TST PMCR Comp, Smarty on 8.

:D :D :D :-laf :-laf :-laf

I -almost- felt sorry for all the traffic behind me when I got in the throttle on the interstate . . rpms too low . . good golly. It smoked SMOKED SMOKED. I have soot in the bed of the truck. Not dust; you can see clods of soot. No kidding.

With aggressive mud tires on I still managed to lay rubber three different times without trying. Actually; I was trying not too! And turning into traffic from a stop?... . have to be VERY gentle on the throttle to keep from spinning it around! YeeHaa!

Keep the RPMs up with a little boost and it's clean as can be. I need to street drive this truck about 600 or 700 rpm higher then I'm used too. Note the aggressive street cam is in large part at fault for that (not the smarty). I don't build boost until high in the rpm range. For daily street driving after pulling season is over I'll pull the pressure box out and that'll clean it up a lot I'm sure.

FUN.

Did I mention it does pretty good on a pulling track for (still) low rpm 3rd gen?

I ran my Smarty and Hot edge today and it seems fine. Level 8 on Smarty is very smokey and I love it. Add the Edge and smoke tell turbo gets in the 30+ psi range before it cleans out.

Smarty and a new noise under the hood

Uploaded a few programs to the truck today after the ups man drove away. Smiles all around except for that new noise under the hood. If I turn the key on and let it sit I hear a fast paced ticking noise that quits after about thirty seconds. I know that it is not the fuel pump cause that keeps ticking after this new noise stops. Anybody have this happen?
