Any body do repo's for a living?

Just curious if any one out there repos cars, trucks, acampers, boats, farm equipment, or anything else like that? I heard of one guy who hooks cars for a living. . makes mad money #ad
per night.

Not me, but I had a friend who did it in the 1980s. He was handy with a concealed weapon, knife, and/or his fists, but he only lasted in the business about three weeks.

Spending the night on top of his tow rig surrounded by angry bear dogs while listening to the drunken mountain boys discussing what they were going to do with his body, and ducking the occaisional bullets fired over his head convinced him there were better methods to put food on the table... ... .....

My bro-in-law's bro-in-law was doing repo's in the San Jose-Oakland area about 15 years ago and liked it. When I met him he was in the business for 5 years already. He had a 3/4 ton Chevy with a tow package called the Illusion made by a guy in Texas. Truck looked like a reg. pickup since the tow unit was hidden in the bed. Took about 10 secs for tow rig to pop out ready to hook up. He also repo'd boats too. Had a lot of wild stories to tell. On his best night he got 10 cars. Hardest one he had to stalk the guy for 6 days before he got a chance to grab it. He got paid anywhere from $150 to $1000 per car, depended on car and how difficult it was to get. He grabbed Porsches, Ferraris and other exotics, as well as plain jane cars. I don't know if he is still in business or not. Haven't kept in touch with my bro-in-law since he moved to New York about 7 years ago.

My first job with International Harvester Co. in the mid 60s was a Zone Credit Rep. which invloved among other things repo work on farm equipment and trucks. It wasn't too bad since the clientele was better than used cars--had a couple of dicey moments when an old farmer pulled a shotgun on me and one night when we "dolleyed down" a trailer on the parking lot, hot wired the truck-tractor, and drove it off while the driver was in the beer joint. I would like to been there to see his face when he came back out!!

I did that for a year and then got into sales. I didn't like all the odd hours and liked sales MUCH better. It was a great experience, but I wouldn't do it again.

One of my former employers was the guy who built the Illusion here in Houston. His son was a friend of mine, and I went to to do some marketing work for his repo company. My curiousity got the better of me, and I went out a few time with an Illusion unit. Quick-hooked a few, talked a few out of their cars, and was chased by a group of gang-bangers all the way back to the yard. Boy was I stupid! Never again.

Bottom line: Ugly business, very dangerous, but the money's good. Can't use a diesel, though! #ad
