anybody had a problem with the oil pressure gauges going to 80 psi when the truck is not running? If i just turn the key on, not start it, the gauge moves to around 80 or so. With the truck running the gauge never moves regardless of temp or RPM? At one point the gauge was reading zero scared the crap out of me. then my fiance told me that it did that the other day too, but she only drove to taco bell and back when at zero so it wasn't that far (oh my god lol) but she said she started it up 3 times then it fixed itself (so I was pretty sure it wasn't in the engine) I got the zero to come back up to stuck at 80psi by reseting the computer (holding the trip and cycling the key . . . ) Anybody else had any problems with this? Dash cluster or oil sending unit?

Thanks

Scott

Happened to me....

My bet is the sending unit, happens often. I've never heard of the guage going bad, even though I'm sure it could happen.

Oh yeah especialy on the 01 trucks! I have gone thru a sender allready @ 18,000 miles! The updated sending unit from cummins has not given me one problem ever scince. The dodge cure was of course to reflash the ecm  worked for some but it seems the masses that replace the sending unit have better luck

Check the bulletins you will see they had a problem with the senders and when they do the re flash it does not do a thing to fix the sender but sent false input to the dash. I strongly recommend replacing the sender do not let them do a re flash.

BTW get the sender from Cummins! It'l save you 400% markup

Had a similar problem intermittently on my 98. The cummins tech said "if the pressure is really gone, you will definitely hear it get rough". Always sounded the same, so I left it alone.

Dodge fix..

Scott, don't let them do the ecm reflash, just buy a sender from Cummins. The reflash will render your gauge useless, it will become an idiot guage that always shows normal oil pressure. My guage is worthless now.

Suspect sender unit?

My sender went "tits-up" at 46k+ miles from new in the greater Brussels area in Belgium . Replaced with unit supplied by fellow TDR member (me40su) in Texas. Hang on in there

Mine did the same thing about 83000 mi. Now mine goes up to 40 at startup, down to 0 up all the way generally bounces around all over. I put in a mechanical guage and don't pay any attention to it.

sender repair tip

I had a problem like yours and on the second sender,so time to see what makes it work, remove sender, carefully pry the cover from the opposite end of the threads of the sender, you will see the wiper arm and contact and the wire wound resistor and you will most likely see a gob of grease built upon the resistor it the extreme ends of its normal stroke. Use some contact cleaner and clean , a light lubing and snap cover back on . A pressure regulator and a ohm meter will show the irregularity before service and a linear sweep afterward . May not work for all but I have had the original bad sender on the truck for months now and works great, and have a spare for the future. Tim

PS,this was an a 98 12valve
