wife stunned me today when she traded off her ford for a used 3rd gen ... good girl:D ...

gonna take muffler off tommorow and make an appointment for the 2000 rpm drone tsb

my question is; are there any easy airfilter upgrades, similiar to the bhaf in my '01 ...

love the truck but man you aughta be able to hear a little of that beautiful motor workin'

any other tips or advice would be appreciated

Scotty 3 ram air intake - draws only COLD outside air from two locations - the stock location and ram air from the front. Really increased throttle response, and cool turbo sound now! It has an afe filter - www.wildcatdiesel.com has them. Install took literally 5 minutes.

I wish someone would come up with a good BHAF filter for the 3rd gen, but nobody seems to have it as a priority. Most on the 3rd Gen board are newer owners and don't get into the deep modifications that the 2nd Genners do. I would feel better with a big disposable filter than an oil sprayed one.

I am impressed with the aFe Pro 7 set-up. It has a major heat shield with a seal on top that would block out the engine heat, very easy to put on. I got mine from Geno's. I would advise getting the pre-filter as well. The pro-7 is supposed to give a high degree of filtration and that is why Geno's carries it. I have been very pleased with anything I have bought from them over the years. It is a very simple task to put the filter on, my wife could do it after I explained what a wrench is;) . I doubt if there is a major difference in performance between the Scotty and the aFe, it seems to just a matter of personal taste. From what I can gather, they are both good, but the pro-7 filter may have the edge on filtration.

once again the tdr brotherhood comes through...

ok next questions

took out silencer ring ... ahhhhhh much better

now first: at 10k this garage kept beauty had the nastiest air filter i've ever seen ... talked to my buds at the local dodge garage ... they said that 10k was too long for air filters to go in the third gens ... said "we know how you are about maintenance Rex, you will be changing them every 5k" ... pretty expensive maintanence schedule?

... but they had another third gen in with 11k and the original pink air filter looked like mine ... black and buggy ...

any thoughts?

second; why the X in the plastic downpipe between the turbo and filter ... if its for airflow GREAT ... . if it is for noise reduction at the expense of airflow its outta there

third; what is the sensor on the airbox lid, how does it work with the above mentioned aftermarket filter kits ... another possible source of modification or a leave it alone sensor

ordered my '03 shop manual today, will have to do a whole lot of study'in methinks

again thanks

That's the IAT/P (Inlet Air Temperature/Pressure) sensor. It measures the temperature of the incoming air, as well as the barometric pressure (should always be about the same as the outside atmosphere, unless the filter's plugged up).

Most intake kits (the good ones, anyway) come with a fixture to relocate this sensor. The Scotty RA3 did (once I glued it back on - dang thing broke off in shipping... no big deal). You just unscrew it from the stock box and screw it on to the replacement box. Same with the FilterMinder.

Hmmm, mine did too. Same result--just glued it back on, no big deal, but Scott1, are you listening?

May I ask why I am finding this out now? Did you contact the vendor? Can I replace the defective unit for a correct one?

Please PM me with your concerns and I will resolve it.

Yes, I am reading/listening.

As I said, in my case it was no big deal and easily fixed as I was installing it. As an isolated failure, it wasn't worth mentioning. However, now that I see that it wasn't (completely) isolated, hindsight says I should have let you (or Rod--I got it from him) know, just so you could track a potential common problem.

Again, I am completely satisfied with it--thanks!

Speaking for myself, I certainly didn't mean for my remark to sound like a complaint. I understand the one thing you guys don't have control over is how these boxes are handled by the various shipping companies. For a quick 2-minute epoxy job, I certainly wan't going to bug Rod S. about it - epecially considering he gave me free shipping on the unit.

OK Very good. I can relate to the quick 2 minute epoxy job... I've done that with a few things I had shipped to me.

I actually got a badly beaten box with tire marks on it last year... that was shipped six months prior... there was a stamp on it... 'undeliverable' LOL No kidding

Thanks for the reply.

If the Scotty 3 came with a Pro Guard 7, I would have ordered one already. I understand that the same filter style is not available in the PG7, but there must be something close. I would give up a little flow to go this way. I just wasted 24 bucks on a stock filter that could have gone towards a better system.

I'm not worried about the filtration capabilities of the AFE in the scotty3. I think genos and everyone else pushing the new PG7 over everything prior is just marketing. It may be marginally better but we'll see. I'll have some oil analysis reports done soon and see what the silicon readings are. My guess is they wont be much different. In my E300 I ran a stock paper, K&n, and amsoil foam, and all readings were within 1... not enough to even think twice about IMO. .

I had the previous generation AFE on my last truck, and compared to the K&N cone filter I had before that, the AFE was leaps and bounds better than the K&N. I would feel good about going with the filter in Scotty's system and that's the one I'm leaning towards right now.
