My mom died last year, and my dad is getting remarried (a topic of its own that I could rant about for a while). Anyway, he told me and my sister that the property (land and house) will still pass to us in his will, but he is giving the new woman life estate to the property. I am concerned about some of the provisions of the life estate and need some help deciphering lawyer speak. Boy, what a messed up situation :(

You need a lawyer.

I've been involved in estate property disputes with relatives and it can get very messy. Luckily in my case the relatives mostly decided to do the right thing.

Yeah, I've known several people who had to deal with those situations. Some of them didn't fare too well, so you are right, I need to talk to a lawyer. Just seeing if anyone on here happened to be one in the Dallas area.

Check with the State Bar of Texas (in Austin) or the Bar Association in Dallas County- either should be able to give referrals for lawyers who specialize in that area of the law. Added bonus- if they're like the Houston Bar Association, the first meeting is FREE! :D
