Hi guys,

Since I don't have the $$$'s to get an LSD, I have been toying with the idea of having my diff welded up.

What's the thoughts' on this??

Any issues to consider in terms of practicality, reliability, or whatever????

If I do this, do I end up with what is basically a poor mans Detroit Locker?

I have lived in verry rural areas for a long time we used to weld up diffs when we blew spider gears on vehicles used to get up nasty roads that ones normal cars shouldent be used for

I wouldent advise it unless for off road use only it will be hell on the pavment making turns hopping up & down & barking like a huge puppy dog in turns

also it is verry likley that the welds will break loose wasting at least the spider gears

I wouldent advise it

I think they have those spools dont they? or other more afordable means than replacing the whole carier

have you checked 4 WHEEL PARTS or the likes?

take care

Bob, this is one of those mods that is not a compromise. :) You would love it off road, but probably not like it on road. You'll have no-nonsense traction. ;) I have welded several diffs used for off road and mud racing. Like anything else, it can be done the right way or the wrong way, depending on where you weld it and what you weld it with. It can be done so that the spiders won't break. I'd probably look at what the percentage you'll use the truck on road vs. off road, because there's no going back with this mod, besides replacing expensive parts. :D

If you decide to do it, I'd be glad to tell you what has worked for me.

As for the welding up the diff..... besides the hopping and shuddering in turns on pavement, it can be quite dangerous when the roads are wet. A light tap of throttle would easily send you arse over teakettle in a turn.

I did this to one of my trucks in the early 70's. (60's model truck). On the highway it would try to push you straight on curves unless you let up on it and kind of coasted around the curves and in 4x4 it was a ***** to drive hopping around.

As for the shaking hopping and shuddering, I do that when I see nascar mark behind the wheel..... ;):D:D

But, I may have to rethink this plan.....

Both the diffs on my Cherokee have a "Lincoln Locker" and I love them for rock crawling, but would recommend against it for any onroad vehicle.

Glad to hear the senior moment has passed now. You would have been looking for another carrier assy or a set of spider gears within a week.
