I'm soon going to be putting a CB and Ham radio in my 2005 CTD. I know in my Jeep there is two "spare" power leads right behind the radio, one switched and one non-switched. Did they do something like this in the Dodge? Where are people getting power for CB's and the like?

I wired my CB directly to the battery, that way there is no chance of it causing issues with the computers. In fact I seem to remember reading something in the literature that came with my truck, that hooking to battery is preferred method for cb radios and such.

I don't have a CB, but the best way to wire it is to run a twisted pair, or coaxial for both +and ground to the battery. That will give the least interference possible.

Hi All,

I am spending my Sunday outfitting my new '06 with my ham radio and trailer brake controller. Everything is finished except the power run to the batter from the radio under my seat.

How did you all penetrate the firewall? I cannot find any space in the existing grommets, and hate to drill through the fancy noise abatement insulation.

Thanks...

~Chris

EDIT: Well, in this heat something had to be done. I pierced a small hole in the large grommet for all wiring and fished the wires through. Perfect!

NO need to... there was already 30amps of wiring installed under the drivers seat (for the power-seat motors) PLUS an additional 10amps for the center console outlet.

Under the REAR-driver's side seat carpet is a grommet that accommodates 4 runs of rg-58u antenna coax. Then seal up the hole with some coax seal tape when finished.

Hey there,

Oooohhh... thanks for the tip for the RG58 grommet. I was getting ready to drill through. Really good tip...

RStroede,

I made the mistake of using the cigarette lighter wiring for my CB. Turns out the CB holds a little juice after the truck is shut down, which causes a feedback and it powers the annoying buzzer and radio for a short time after the key has been removed.

It took my dealer 4 visits to figure it out. I actually felt sorry for them.

Direct wiring ito the battery is the best way to go.

To get through the firewall with a 6 speed you have to drill a hole in the steering column grommet.

I have a Icom MIIG that I want to mount under the driver's seat with the control head remoted and a 2M/440 with a remote head to be mounted somewhere (maybe under passenger seat?). I have the power seats in both positions ('05 3500 QC dually Laramie). How is the foot tread/carpet cover removed? I wanted to mount the 2M/440 ant thru the cab roof, but have a sun roof and don't know if space is available to snake coax over and down rear side post. Any suggestions? Thanks

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll be working on it soon. WA5LTA, I put the "factory" Sirius in myself and then antenna is near the back of the roof. The sunroof doesn't come that far back, so there is room to put the antenna there and run wires down the back pillar or around to the side and down the a-pillar (which is what the Sirius wiring does).

But, I'm planning on using mounts that go in the stake pockets in the bed and do twin whip antennas, one for the ham and one for the CB. So, thank you GoCarGo for the tip on how to get out the back without drilling.

I just punched a very small hole with a knife in the large grommet protecting the mass of wires to the left of the clutch pedal. Thought about going through steering column but I was afraid of too many moving parts nearby.

Worked pretty well for me... .

Hey GoCarGo,

Where exactly is that grommet for the RG58 coax? I found, while underneath, one suspicious metal contraption that looks like you can remove it somehow... . is there something else you speak of in regards to the factory provided coaxial penetration point?

Thanks!
