and does anybody know what kind of coating this is? if i need to touch it up with anything special, or if i even need to touch it up at all? i'm going to be cutting a hole in it, and welding a piece of pipe to it, so it will get kinda messed up on the inside. thanks for any info you can provide.

Sure is nice and clean in there. That's certainly something to be happy about. If the coating on your oil pan is anything like the coatings we use for large gearboxes and crankcases (power generation and oil refinery machinery) you will destroy some of the coating in welding, but the rest should stay put. If in doubt, find someone with a blast cabinet and sand blast it. I can't think of a reason why you would need it. I don't remember if the 1st gen oil pan is steel or not, but as long as you don't have tons of water in your oil and you never drive the truck there shouldn't be a rust issue. At least not from the inside! :-laf

Whats the pipe for? Oil temp?

Good luck. I miss my 93.

return line for a big turbo. so maybe if i weld it and then just blast the area around the weld i would be ok? thanks for the info.

I would think so. You'll know more when you blast the area around the weld. if the coating cmes off easily then I would take it out. You may want to take it out anyways just to keep from coating failure from happening later. It's a common thing (on industrial machinery) for the coating to slowly come off and sometimes it fails so bad the customer can't figure out what is floating in his oil. We take the machine apart and find the coating all piled up in the corners. Now, that is on big machinery, I don't know what kind of coating you have or what kind of shape it is in. Hopefully some others chime in so you have more than one opinion to work from. Good luck.
