I had the in tank conversion done 10K miles ago. No problems whatsoever. This morning I had no fuel pressure. Truck ran fine with no check engine light on. I just dropped it off at the dealer for a pressure check. I'll let you know what they found out in a few hours. Has anyone had the in tank lift pump fail?
 
Mine has only been in for 4 months but have not had any problem. In fact, I got my best winter mpg @ 19. 7. 46,000 miles on truck. :)
 
Mine's been in for almost 2 months and 3,000 miles. It's been very consistent so far. Just a little under 98,000 on the truck.
 
Well, as Homer Simpson said, "Doh"! The technician found a blown fuse. Everything is cool. I had them do the 90K service also.

My pressures are 9psi at idle and 3 psi at WOT. It never drops all the way to zero even towing up hill in the passing lane.
 
Had it done about four months and 8K miles ago. 8 psi at idle, 7 psi at cruise, and 5 psi under full acceleration from a dead stop to 80 mph. Pressures are measured at the Schrader valve on the VP 44.
 
nevadabackroader, so if your intank pump stoped working, you was able to still crank engine & run it to the shop, these intank pumps are not like the intank pumps on gas engine I would say,i had a gas intank pump go bad, an truck did not start.
 
The in tank pump was working fine. I blew the fuse for the fuel gauge by using one of those electric defrosters you plug into the cig lighter socket. I do think the VP44 will gat you to the shop with out the lift pump if you take it easy (under 2000 rpm). Point is, we haven't heard from anyone who has had one fail yet.
 
I have a 2001 with 99k. I have been having serious fuel delivery problems since 82k. Two of the old style pumps and now I am having problems with the new in tank pump. It worked fine for about 3k then on long runs (300 miles plus) I am losing fuel pressure (like sucking on the gauge). If I stop and let it rest the pressure comes back for awhile. If you stop for the night and let it rest you start the cycle over again. What a pain. The pressure at the vp44 is only running 5psi at idle and under load 4psi with an 8k trailer. That bothers me but the dealer says that is normal. Yes I have changed the fuel filter with no change in pressure. Any ideas?
 
Thanks for the tip. I read the tread. Are they talking about the screen in the old lift pump(one attached to side of engine)? I have the in tank pump. When they installed it the fuel line goes directly to the aluminum housing where the lift pump was. The line from the tank attaches to the aluminum housing... . then comes out the other side and goes to the injector pump. Is there something inside that housing? I suspect not. May look tonight if I get time. I installed another fuel filter just in case. No change. I just took the truck for a spin. 6PSI at iddle. WOT I was sucking fuel. I'm not much for giving up... but I am thinking of calling Vulcan Perf and the heck with the in tank pump.
 
Had simular symptoms years ago with a gas engine and the problem was a blocked vent in the gas cap which caused a vacuum to form in the tank and the fuel pump just couldn't suck fuel out against the vacuum. . Of course when I stopped the vacuum gradually disappeared and then formed again when I started up again..... Sounds just like your problem... ...
 
I believe that he had a clogged screen on the in tank inlet. Could be you got skanky fuel with lots of growth, it would float in the tank then be drawn up to the screen when the engine is running. After you shut down the suction goes away and the crud would float off the inlet screen. I have seen this with rust in fuel tanks on gas cars and trucks, most manufactures have gone to plastic tanks so no more rust problems unless you get it from the pumps or somebody puts stuff in your tank... ..... This is just a guess and other than pull the tank, which is a PIA I dont know how you could test for it, At least with the pressure guage you know it is loosing pressure before the filter on the motor narrowing it don to something down stream. Load testing the pump, also a PIA would tell you if it is overloaded. Good Luck and keep us updated.
