just received a catalog from spearco intercoolers... they've got all sorts of cores and hard tubing, manifolds, boots etc...
anyway my question is this, what is a good flow rate for my application(see below in sig). . they have many diesel application cores... how many CFM do i need to flow well enough to see substantial cooling and performance gains?( 4. 1L to 7. 5L diesel application cores flow from 700 CFM to 1500CFM)
second question: what is a good charge efficiency? ie... . 80 . 90 etc????
also... what do i need to keep the charge pressure drop low?

thanx in advance
joe

Would you by any chance have A phone number for that catalog? I think that would be A book definnately worth looking at. .

in case u didn't get my email... 818. 901. 7851... got my catalog within 5 days... some neat stuff like water injection kits and some liquid to air intercoolers

Or on the web at: www.spearcointercoolers.com

you can calculate your CFM by taking the CID of your engine, dividing it by 12^3 to get it in cubic feet displacement and then multiplying it by the governed RPM that your engine is set to. Take this number and buy the next biggest intercooler.

------------------
91. 5 CTD, 5" Stacks

One small correction to unclebilly's formula is to divide the result by 2 because it takes 2 crankshaft revolutions to displace the CID of the engine when the engine is a four stroke.

Interstingly, for our 359 CID Cummins engines it just happens that theoretical CFM is 1/10 the RPM. So if the engine is running at 3000 rpm with no boost is will require 300 CFM theoretically. However because of the turbo charger the actual airflow through the engine may be twice or more than the theoretical amount. Therefore triple the calculated CFM (about 900 CFM). The pressure drop to obtain this flow should be less than 2 psi.

Cummins diesels take very small intercoolers. Powerstrokes have very large ones because they have more displacement and run at higher RPM's. The stock Dodge unit is adequate, but probably less efficient than the Banks unit, because Banks mounts them in FRONT of the AC condensor! I'll take the cold AC and a little less intercooling here in South Florida! If nyou REALLY want to cool it, use one of the trick units that uses the AC compressor to cool down the inlet charge!

Thanks much Jsimpson for mentioning that the Banks unit is in front of the A/C condenser. If that is the case with a '93 kit my Banks intercooler project (tax return financed) is cancelled.

There definitely seems to be some confusion. The Banks intercooler for a ’93 application mounts directly in place of the factory intercooler, behind the A/C condenser and in front of the radiator.
