I just picked up a set of 5" stacks. :D I am getting ready to drive from Washington to Florida this January then back again in April. Does anyone have any bad experiences with driving cross country with stacks? I don't want any hassles from the local or state police in the various states. I could wait until I get back to install them. However, I would really like to get them on before I go.

I have never had a single problem with the law and my stacks in any state I have been in. I have been pulled over a few times for minor things and the stacks have never been an issue. Use a little common sence in town and around police and I doubt you will ever have a problem.

In some states, modification to exhaust is illegal, example California... As long as your not being a donkey, you won't be bothered... .

put um on and post pics now!

Stacks

I am getting the rest of the parts together now. I got these used from a truck repair shop in town. I turns out they are muffler stacks and are 6" in diameter. They reduce to 5" at the bottoms. I scrounge up some 5" clamps, flex pipe, some 90 deg fittings today (used but in nice shape). Once they are in I'll post pictures.

I also found an air horn off an freightliner. I have the air tank as well. Any one know were I can pick up a 12 volt air compressor to drive this. I used my compressor at home. It sounded pretty dang good. It should scare the crap out of those import drivers.

Anyone need a turbo off a freightliner?

in TX (and California, and I'm sure numerous other states) a turbocharger is considered a muffler on a diesel... now, there may be local noise ordinances, but if you're not WOT on the throttle, you shouldn't exceed the legal db levels... also, in TX, exhaust is required to exit behind, beside, or ABOVE the passenger compartment... and this is on a passenger vehicle, not on a class 8 or anything like that...

IE, stacks are PERFECTLY LEGAL in TX. now... removing a cat is a whole other story, but your truck didn't come with one, so no worries there.

I wouldn't sweat it too much... stacks aren't really that loud. not nearly as loud as a big straight pipe system under the truck, and it seems that most highway patrol officer seem to think they're pretty cool... now, if you're 18 and have a bunch of stickers on your back window and your hat on backwards, it may be a different story, but for the most part, stacks aren't quite the "red flag" you may be thinking they are.

I have a set of 4" stacks on my Cummins powered Ford. They have been on there since 1990 with no problems, except once. This was at the Tehachapi port of entry in Ca. I was over weight and over width with all necessary permits so no problems there, however no muffler was a $65. 00 ticket. I mentioned the turbo thing, and all I recieved was "in Ca. you hafta have a muffler". :(

that's why you gotta carry a copy of the state DOT rules/regs... I looked it up, and in TX, in the definition of "muffler" it includes "a turbine device on a diesel". now, like I said, I might have a little trouble w/ no cat on my '97, but...

Not trying to hijack the thread, but wouldn't stacks be louder than a straight pipe?

No.

Stacks the sound goes out the stack. On my truck I am staight piped with RIP's 4" exhaust and the noise maker is pointing right into the widow of the person I am trying to pass. I can only imagine the number of times I have been called a MF and that I am #1. :D

I'll put it to ya this way. When I had a straight 5" system, my sister said that I was rattling the decorative plates she has on a shelf in her room when I went past the house. With the miter top stacks, she has yet to say anything about them. The sound mostly goes straight up. That is one of the reasons I got miter tops, vs turn out stacks. None of the neighbors has complained about either set-up. I try to go easy as to not be to obnoxious. There are plenty of teenagers with glass packs on their trucks to make that up. :-laf

Ive been running stacks for about a year now, with no problems. there were rumors at one time that a couple state cops in western PA were writting tickets for no heatshields. i dont think the heatshield law applies to stacks in the bed, it would only apply if your stacks ran outside the bed. you shouldnt have any problems. post some pics of your stacks once you get them in.

Another related question. Would they be louder in the cab, since the exit is right behind you. Or since the exit is abouve your head, would it be quieter?

I had trouble with a local cop in central PA a while back. No ticket, just a little verbal abuse. LOL Have passed many state troopers without trouble and never any inspection troubles.

So far stacked trucks down here haven't had any problems with local or state police, the only thing that the little town closest to me has a problem with is the use of the jakebrake in town while there cruising, which they shouldn't have to use those just crusing town, that will get you a ticket and a not so happy officer.

But as far as stacks go, no a problem here actually it seems to be contagious here more and more are showing up, I have heard passing stacked Cummins trucks and there not nearly as loud as when i had the muffler and pipe gone with just the turbo to resonator can before the muffler elimination pipe came, not talk about loud, the noise would echo off buildings in town and shortly after while running with just the turbo to resonator can i got caught in a road check, needless to say the take off was very slow and deliberate as both town and state boys were standing right at my truck :-laf , actually the cop said that thing sounds good, and drive safely... :D

How would they know, well when you can sit in town and hear the exhaust brakes come on in the adjacent streets next to you and in this case the main st runs parallel to the back st. thats how you can hear them, and most likely most of them are straight piped which would result in more than a hissing sound.

The local town where i went to school at, they have passed a exhaust brake restriction in town no matter if you have 4 wheels or 18 wheels, but the town above is in NC which is the closest town to me. But i have to say that most are younger kids. I hope that helps a little forrest as i have been up in town when these kids were getting pulled and the fact that alot of pple live in the apartments above the businesses i think that had alot to do with the crackdown.....

I don't see how you could even hear one from more than 10ft away...

an engine brake on a straight piped 18 wheeler, you can hear from a MILE away, but an exhaust brake?

Forrest

I thought the same thing forrest but i was up town and just ran through the strip and you can hear those things alot further off than 10 ft, im guessing there straight piped from the turbo back, and there are a few up there that have them turned up and its basically like following a Peterbuilt taking off with a full load :-laf me personally i don't have a problem with it i think its wicked, but the police don't seem to find any humor in it. . I would assume some of those guys have the comp boxes also. But those exhaust brakes are loud. Hope your having a wonderful Thanksgiving. .
