This guy is Thinking about a Buy Back 6.0!!!!!

What I have is an 81' EM6 285 which started life as an intercooled motor. A few years back it was put into a glider and switched to aftercooled. The turbo and injectors were upgraded, but nothing done to the fuel pump and timing. I have been toying with the idea of dropping a 3406B into the truck which has had me asking a few questions about the component changes needed for switching an intercooled to an aftercooled engine. On a Cat the timing needs adjusted among other things for the change hence the wonder if my Mack engine needed timing changes. Thanks for any input.

I had a superliner with a sleeper about 15 years ago.

It had a 300 (old 2 valve engine)and a 5 speed with 4. 17's. Pedigree. :D

It ran along with the 350's and even gave a few 400's a good run.

These were big engines back then.

A buddy of mine had an old R model with a 237 and 5 speed.

I dont know what was done to it, but that thing could smoke my ***** without breaking a sweat.

I suppose you could have the pump worked on (Amboy generator here in N. J. didnt want to turn mine up for me..... authorised Bosch repair facility etc. etc. )

Bump up the timing. I dont know about injectors. Propane???:eek

The pump was actually just rebuilt last year, (not cheap 700. 00 odd bucks at a Bosch repair facility) the pump is turned up 10%. I talked with them about the engine but "they know pumps, not so much bout engines they fuel" Thanks.

Are you talking about a cat with the water jacket cooler intake on the engine or a aftercooler in front of the radiator. If its a water jacket and its a 400hp rated you can make a lot of power out of it. Make sure the valves are set where the feeler guage is as loose as you can but no slop, Then have the timing set 1/8 of an inch from the top of the graph and that the advance is not slipping. If you have a airdrier and the aircompressor gets its fresh air from the intake put on a pr4 valve. I will have to check on the fuel settings that were used. Good luck

What year and model glider kit? I repowered a 1972 Mack R-model w/ENDT673, 237 HP Mack engine to a 855/350 Cummins and it was 6" longer. The Mack used rear motor mounts on the side of the transmission rather than on the bellhousing (old 5x4 quadruplex) and when I moved them back 6' the frame was narrower, however it was doable.

How is the aftercooler set up on the Mack motor, I have only seen intercoolers. The 285 ENDT 676 you are talking about used an engine mounted intercooler with the forced air produced by the tip turban fan. It looks somewhat like a turbo and is powered by the turbo with fresh air pulled from the air cleaner.

The fuel pump is easy to turn up and will make those little motors run! Is it the straight Mack 5spd or 12 spd. They use 3 countershafts for torque management, very tough transmissions, but heavy and expensive to repair.

The 3406 I'm currently looking at is a 400 with water jacket cooling. Having that engine run "hot" isn't a problem as there are a few guys at the shop that would love to be able to "play" with an engine instead of what mother Cat says it should run at.

The glider is a 2001 RD 686 with the aftercooler in front of the rad. The entire intercooling system was remove and replaced with the updated intake and water manifolds. It had a 2 stick 5 speed (TRXL 201 ?) Last year I put a rebuilt RTXO1490 8LL in. It will be a tight fit with the Cat, but Mack was putting E-7 460's in RD's and I believe they are 14 liter engines so hopefully it'll fit. But thats a project a few miles down the road.

The Mack E-7/460 is (12L) 728 cubic inch. However I am not sure of the dimensions. They are too new for my era of trucking.

Yep. We have a E-7 350 in the '95 CH. Wish it was 14L. :D

I bet the install of a 3406 Cat will be tight, at least it would be on a CH613.

I know a guy that is running a 3306 (350hp, maybe) in one of his R model Mack dump trucks. IIRC, the displacement in a 3306 (I-6) is 638cid. A 3208 (V8) is 636cid.

I understand what an Intercooler does... What is an "Aftercooler"?

The terms mean the same thing. As one example, John Deere used to call the cooler on a 466cid engine an a intercooler. Later when the engine was renamed the 6076, they started to call it an aftercooler. Both were made the same way. It is a water-to-air cooler that was used on the tractors up to around the early '90s. Now, most that Deere uses, are air-to-air (charge air cooler is another name for it). Cat uses the term ATAAC. Air-To-Air After Cooled.
