this topic has folks on both sides of the fence.

similar to the auto transmission upgrade debates. :-{}

I hope we don't start bickering about this like the transmission wars. Can you imagine the moderators laying out ground rules for discussing the decibles of 2nd vs 3rd gen trucks :-laf :-laf :-laf

I voted no hesitantly. I still get a lil shiver when I hear a 2nd gen and start thinkin about my ole '99 which a friend still has. But truth be known, I like the '03. Quieter under the hood, but my exhaust leaves no doubt that there is some power up there. If somebody can help me figure out how to post an mpeg, I can get a good clip from the bed while somebody else bangs the gears :)

I like the quiet, but what I do miss, is being able to mash the pedal and blow a big diesel cloud to the person who is tailgating me... ... this always made them back way off

I never owned a 2nd Gen but did get to borrow a 01. 5 for a while. Eventhough it had less power due to being a CA SO, the entertainment factor was better than my 600.

- Pull up curbside in front of a Coffee House and (no offense) yuppie yahoos can't even talk on their cell phones. They give you the stink eyes so you accelerate away hard leaving them in a diesel cloud.

- Pull up next to someone at a stoplight and the poor distracted cell phone talking driver can't hear jack with their window down.

Downside was I could't hear my own cell phone with the windows down :p

My 600 is so quiet that I've had people actually approach me and ask how come the new diesels are so quiet? That brings me down. I really liked the rattle and smoke. Wish the 600 had a little more rattle and ability to put put out some nice size puffs consistently. I know I know, I need to get a life!

I really like the quiet of my 04. 5. It was part of the reason for upgrading. That being said, when I hear a 2nd gen, it reminds my of the "good old days".

Occasionally I like to hear the clatter, and my 97 takes care of that. The Diesel Dynamics turbo and exhaust on my '04 take care of the other sounds I like to hear.

I didn't vote because this is my first diesel truck. I don't think I would have bought a diesel if it wasn't quiet and had my eye on a Dmax before the HPCR Cummins. I do like the sound of the 12V but the 24V doesn't do much for me unless they are straight piped. I think my exhaust is going to have to change :D

As others have said. I used to like the quiet when I was leaving early in the morning and when I was in drivethru's. However now that I have the straight thru muffler, 5" exhuast and the pusher pump, I have pretty much taken care of most of the drivethrus. :D I sure do miss my 01 though. :( :{
