Any other Mac users on here?

Just wondering if there are any other Mac users here on the site? I will be getting a new Powerbook to replace my PC after having way, way too many failures and crashes. Not to mention lost information, my time and cursing computers. The wife is a die-hard Mac nut and swears by them. I hear the graphics are top notch and there's no virus. What's ya'll opinion of them?

Prior to my PC I was a Mac user for over 14 years. The Mac is an excellent piece of hardware and very user friendly. I replaced the Mac with a PC for a number of reasons: - PC is cheaper, much greater choice of makes and models, more accessories and peripherials available, much more software available. Don't get me wrong I am not knocking the Mac.

Historically (late 1980's early 90's) these used to be worse. The only people who owned them were classic computer nerd kids who had nothing constructive to do with their time.



At this point in time the Mac market share is so small that my guess is most "evil do-er's" don't really care. The PC market is easier to hack and infections can run in the millions! You want to talk about an ego trip...



I've used them in the past. They have their place. I can't see the point in getting one and then having to run a PC emulator to use the software that is only writen for PC's.

All I can say is that even though Apple went through some rough times a few years back, they have more than pulled through. I got one of the last Titanium Powerbooks, and basically it sucks on the outside, but it runs like a dream. The newer aluminium cases are much better, even though they look a little cheap in my opinion. I'm, like a few others around here, a die-hard Mac fan, and I wouldn't dream of using Windows for personal use, ever.



I think one of the BEST features of the Mac is the hot-swappable USB and FireWire ports. You don't have to worry about the computer flipping on you just because it thinks a connection was lost accidentally when you meant to unplug it.



The graphics are amazing, which explains why Disney and Pixar use Macs to do their animation. Tbone is right that hackers don't care so much about Macs as there are MANY more network infrastructures that can be destroyed with Windows viruses versus Mac viruses. I would still invest in some sort of Anti Virus and Disk Care software, as you can't go wrong with too much protection, especially if you do a lot of file transferring or downloading.



Good luck on the search for a new machine, I know you'll be happy with a Mac.

Thumbs up on Mac units. I've only run an iMac the past 3 years, lots of capability out of the box. What sold me to even purchase one was the power of iMovie for doing my digital video editing. From there, I was just hooked on the entire operating system and quality of software.



I have a new PC at work with XP pro and it took the computer support dept. the better part of a day to do the initial setup, some snags with video drivers and using the DVI port. It started to spaz last week when trying to Explore from My Computer.



If you enjoy daily virus scans, daily microsoft update downloads, installs, reboot after reboot, etc; then the Wintel box is the way to go. It's like some other brand of trucks.



Mac's just seem to run, much like a Cummins. Nuf said.

Macs are a GOOD thing. At work I am one of the last engineers in possession of a Mac, I have an old beige G3 that runs a whopping 233 MHz. The IT weenies have been trying to pry it away from me for 3 years now, but so far I have been able to outfox them.



I am planning to buy my daughter a Mac in the next couple of weeks, however my visits to Fry's to look at them have been complicated by the G5 machines - seeing a dual-processor G5 running on the 23" cinema display makes me forget all about my daughter's needs and instead I scheme and plot trying to figure out how to justify that $5,000 purchase. "Look hon, I can balance the checkbook 25 million times per second. . "



If you haven't seen the G5s in person, check them out. WOW what an impressive computer, both the mechanical design and the actual computer performance.



Best bang for the buck right now: eMac with Combo drive (only need Superdrive if you want to burn DVDs)



Most fun to use (many people say, anyway): 17" iMac

I am on a VERY early PMac G4 right now (400 mhz PCI graphics, 8th one Apple built... ) I have a G3/333 Lombard powerbook at school, dad has a Rev. B iMac (233 mhz) and I have about 5 older macs plus my prized 128k

MAC's here!! Very user friendly too!! Buy one and be happy that you did.



My first Mac was a 2CI /40MHz, then I upgraded to the G3 200Mhz. 5x the first one and I thought it was fast!!

Now I have a dual 1GHz G4 w/2GB Ram and a 21" Cinema display, Harman/Kardon SoundSticks with DSL. I have the G3 and G4 networked to the DSL so my wife and I can be online at the same time.





FYI

In 1986 Steve Jobs invested $10 Million in Pixar(a computer division of Lucasfilm). In 1995 Pixar goes public and the 30 Million shares Jobs owes are worth an estimated $1. 17 BILLION. :--)
