New (to me) toy!

Hello again gentlemen

I have always had cheap BB guns, with the current one an old Crossman 66 Powermaster pump up.

I just bought a Ruger Impact 22 cal. break barrel with 4x32 scope. It appears to be an amazing rifle with wood stock and even a Picatinny Rail mount and weighs 7 pounds:eek:

I was just wondering if anyone else has a pellet rifle that can share info, so I don't have so much trial and error work to do, lol

I think now I need a companion hand gun in a CO2 powered. In the old days, the guns were not sealed very well and every time you wanted to use it the canister would be empty. Has that improved at all?

I've bought a Benjamin Trail NP XL about a year ago. It's a gas piston type that pretty accurate to 25 yds with heavier grain pellets and it's relatively quiet; lighter grains sound similar to a .22 cal. I also installed a Charlie DaTuna GRT-111 trigger on it which smoothed up the action and help improved my groupings 100%.

The technology has improved quite a bit for both spring and gas piston rifles. I always wanted to get into the PCP air rifles but I just get myself to invest $500 + on a pellet gun.

Here's a forum that has tons of info regarding air guns. Don't get hooked!

No offence... ;) ,...but do i hear some grown-ups trying to reach their inner child? :-laf

I use a 22LR but have always had some intrist in pellet guns

A close friend of mine used to be Mr AR15 until he bought his Maurader PCP rifle. After that, he went full tilt with custom PCP rifles.

JH, thanks for the link. I read up on the newbie section but not sure about the Artillery Hold....?

I'm not sure what *artillery Hold* is. I'm not on the site too often, but I do recall it taking a while before the moderator approved my registration though.

Some of these airguns are definitely not toys. Especially the larger caliber models with Co2 power behind them.

Here are some links to some really good aftermarket air rifle parts and tuneup information:

Nice! Ground hog, your days are numbered!

Not a live target, but here is a balistic sample of a modern pellet rifle, 1.5" plastic pipe:eek: The same pipe with my old school pump BB gun just made a small mark and bounced off.

A farmer I know has gone to large caliber, high pressure pellet guns to rid his corn of geese. Rented fields near sub divisions. People nearby. Very quiet. He says it'll put a pellet through a 1inch rough sawn pine board at 100 ft.

" Artillery Hold." ,
yea, that's something that has alluded me.

I'm a decent shot, I've taught at appleseed events for a couple of years as well.

My nephew got a springer in .22 , and we were shooting it at targets.I was not impressed, geez, lots of mechanical movement before that pellet gets down the barrel.
Than later read, apparently there's a way to hold it to minimize those effects and maximize accuracy. That's the "Artillery Hold". But learned nothing of how to do it.

I have a handful of the classic pump and CO2 air rifles and a couple of pistols.
I shoot them far better than my nephew's springer.
So seems this " Artillery Hold " is something to master to shoot the springers well.

yea, over the years, I've bought the ones I wanted when I was a kid, and didn't have the monies nor support of my parents to do so.
Would love to get the M1 carbine air rifle from back in the day.

I am the same way, I can't wrap my brain around letting that barrel do it's thing, while the slug is still traveling down that sucker:-laf About the best I can do with it so far is about a 3" group at 100', I am sure it will shoot better than I can.

I have been shooting for years with a spring/pnuematic RWS .22 cal with Hawk scope . Been slaying the squirrels 50 yds away all day . The artillary hold or AKA howitzer hold is let the forearm rise up when you fire . I hold my hand open so there is no obstruction. Enjoy watch out for the cheap scopes as they will fall apart after a while . Here's a good link for buying stuff . http://www.airgunsofarizona.com/

If I ever invest into another air gun, it will be .22 cal or larger. After watching various videos, the larger calibers have better knockdown capabilities and seems to be quieter than the .17 pellets. During our busy season, I have to be respectful of my guests, so I refrain from shooting anything other than my airguns for rodent control. The ground squirrels have been increasing their presence on my land over the last several years, so I've had to resort to poisoning also.

The .25's are making a come back, and there are even larger with the PCP rifles.
Even air shotguns now.
The air gun has come a long way.

Thomas Jefferson gave one to Lewis and Clarke for their expedition here's a link

Thank you for the video, I watched 2 more! That sucker is awesome. 46cal. 153 gn. slug, that will shoot through a 1" pine board at 100 yards:eek:
