Anyone have a Commercial Firewood Processor

I had a dream...

No, I do not want to hear about your ex-wives!

I just picked up a couple small pigs to raise, one to roast for a Diesel campout, the other for the freezer.
I have not had pigs for years. Any suggestions? Things to watch for? New tricks?

I got the basics down, pen sloping to the south, shade, free choice water and food, mudpit for cool down.
Should be fun for a few months, I do not plan on farming full time.

On the farm growing up in Oklahoma we raised em. Fed them whole corn that had been soaked in water. It sure did stink but the pigs ate it up. They always tasted good to.

Lurch,
Too late! Two of them started to cry the second they saw them! The other one wanted to wash the smaller one and keep it in the house!

Best advice I have for pigs is to never let them get loose. They are so smart about the only way you can get them back is to shoot them.

What I've done for the last few years since our kids, neices or nephews are no longer involved in 4H is to buy some of the neighbors kids 4H pig and fat calve projects. Usually ends up being a two fat hogs (live weight around 240 to 260 ea), a market steer (live weigth around 1200 to 1300) and thiry chickens. We generally give the kids a nickle to dime over market on the pork and beef but it is well worth it in the quality. One thing about it, sure ain't nothin' better on the grille.....

Forget it Gene. I was gonna come to your place for the Diesel Campout, but after the smell of them pigs permitate your place I won't be interested. Camped next to a pig farm once and didn't know it until the wind changed during the night. Wondered why the camp fees were do dang cheap... Of course Gene smells almost as bad, so maybe I can handle it afterall.

illflem - Knowing Gene them pigs will get loose, intentionally. He'll leave the gate open hoping they'll wander of so he can hunt them.

Funny, I don't remember Gramp's pigs stinking...

Gene,I used to raise 8-12 a year, one year my son would feed them fish almost every day,big mistake, they tasted like fish #ad

we had 80 acres on the river,I had a good sheep tight fence and we would let them run loose most of the time,if you do this always feed in the pen so they know its their base, most of the time they could be found in the pen.
The bigest problem I had was come time to take them to slaughter it was difficult to get them in the horse trailer,I found that a week before you get the trailer backed in there and feed them in the trailer, that way they get used to it,then just go down there one morning and shut the door and its ham and bacon time.
One other thing, if you have the provisions to buy your feed bulk than its much more economical. I had some 1 ton bags that I would fill about 8 or 10 at a time than load them off my flatbed trailer to my semi box trailer, inside the semi trailer I had a shute to fill that fed their feeders, this was nice as you didnt have to get in there and slop around with them, also I had a h2o valve in there so I could fill there tank,My big tank was rigged with a small bowl off to the side,I installed a float valve on it so it could fill off the big tank, worked great, about 1 time per week you had to get the junk out of there with your hand so the valve could operate properly. Rig it up right and its no work at all. Kevin

If you even TRY to butcher the family pets... Not only will they NOT eat it, they will roast YOU instead...

Besides, who wants to eat those stinkin' pigs anyway? Eat your veggies and forget it.

Trust me PW, I eat my veggies- I use ketchup.

Some day I'm going to pay another 35$ so I can have a different user name and the GLTDR boys won't see my posts and I can get some REAL answers!!!!!!!

Is that serious about the fish? So if we feed them beer what happens?

I always fed mine beer and brown sugar at 425 15 minutes before its done. You find them in the meat department and they are "spiral sliced". Phuck that stinking mess! And you will damage those kids for life! Grease them and bring them to the diesel gathering... the boys will have a blast, give them beer and pretzels at 3:00 or so!
