Any possible way to mount a winch similar to Power Wagon

Hey I know its not possible to mount a winch behind the bumper like the Power wagon but would it be possible to fab a similar setup. It would be ok if it stuck out halfway.

I dont like how all the aftermarket winch bumpers stick out 3 feet in front of the truck. I have tried the Warn multimount winch plate in the rear with a HS9500 and it couldnt move my dodge out of the snow, so I will need 12K+



Has anybody fabracated up their own sleek bumper or winch mount.



P. S Do they sell a front reciever for 03+

Why don't you go to the Dodge dealer and check to see if the Pwagon frame is the same (most likely). Then purchase the winch, winch carrier, and bumper if needed for the power wagon and bolt it on. Probably going to cost you.



I'd guess for most folks the critter-smacking bumper is primary and the winch is secondary.

Yes, you could fab something that stuck half way out. If you were to remove the tow hooks you could fab up some angle bracket mounts that would support a winch carrier plate that extended as far back as possible without touching the condenser and/or intercooler and have a second set of brackets that bolt to the frame to stop the mount from torquing. You would then have to trim the bumper to the profile shape of the winch and you could recess the winch halfway in.



All of that being said I would not do it. I spent a lot of time trying to come up with a way to do exactly what you are thinking and it all looked a little too messy for me. Here is what I did to minimize the winch projection on my old Ram 1500 I had before my Cummins (http://www.tdr1.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1284468&postcount=7)



Also as you can see in my sig I do have a custom rear hidden mount, imagine a roller fairlead where the license plate is. I will snap a picture of it later today and would be more than happy to share the design if you are interested. You will lose the spare tire space. I also cut a hole in the box to access the mechanical winch controls (high/low/freewheel). As you can probably tell I don't mind slicing and dicing the truck for functional reasons but the semi-hidden front mount was just too messy. Also if you cut that big of a hole in bumper there will me almost no meat left and the bumper will be even more flimsy than it already is.



I have looked at the PW winch mount and there is no way to incorporate anything like it without first fabbing up completely new bumper mounting brackets. In that case you would still be better off seeing if you can get Warn to sell you just the bumper brackets.



As far as those receiver mount winches go I think they are a mistake if you go wheeling anywhere there is mud, muskeg bogs or deep water. Try moving around roughly 150 lb of winch/carrier while standing in a thigh deep mud puddle that is layered with all of the logs and rocks that all of the other folks who got stuck, but didn't have a winch, used to try and get unstuck. I have fallen in more than once just trying to get to my permanently mounted front winch carrying nothing, and no I don't drink and wheel!

I believe what Bob V believes... . I have mounted the spare in the bed and am looking for a rear mounter 12K winch/winch bumper. Besides, we already have 'enough' weight up front!

A few more interesting shots showing tool box and hydraulic reservoir, pressure and flow control setup. I have everything adjusted so that the winch sees its max allowed pressure and flowrate when the truck is idling so I get full winch pull rating and line speed without needing to rev the engine. Also you can see inlet and return lines as well as hydraulic fluid filter installed in passenger side rear wheel well. I also have a B&M supercooler installed between the intercooler and radiator up front to keep the hydraulic system cool.

Aldo here is a shot showing the clearance between intercooler and bumper, so no you can not install PW style mount but as I said above you can still do a mount with the winch sunk say half way into the bumper.

Two more photos and I swear I am done!! Here is a full shot of my baby, she is a little dirty, but thats the way I like 'em!! Also here is a 3d model of the winch mount. It is made from two seperate plates that get bent then welded together. If you would like one I have no problem sharing the design. For you guys in California I could forward the electronic file to Lorenz Indiustries which he sends to his laser cutter to be cut out and bent, Sean would do a few welds and you are done, of course this is all hypothetical you would have to give Sean a call to see if he is even interested.

Do you go out and intentionally get the truck stuck, then just anchor at each end and pop the truck out of the hole?

Not so amazing, once you have invested in the PTO/PUMP/ETC. you will feel obliged to hook everything up to it. My first project this summer will be to rig up a receiver mounted log splitter, then a hydraulic fence post pounder, hydraulic ice fishing auger, hydraulic blender, they don't make hydraulic TV's yet do they? Just kidding about the ice fishing auger. The PTO is a Muncie Power Products device, you can get these from almost any industrial truck upfitter, just look up hydraulic in the yellow pages. Chelsea also makes a PTO that will fit. The PTO itself was about $CAN 650, the pump was 225, reservoir 100, then with 40 -50 feet of hydraulic hose with fittings, some stainless tube with swagelok fittings, priority flow divider, pressure relief valve, gages, hose mounts, yada, yada it probably cost me in the neighbourhood of $CAN 2500. 00. Though I went a little overboard and put in a flowmeter and oil cooler as well.



I will do up a dimensioned drawing in the next few days, shoot me a PM with an e-mail address and I will send it to you, of course this is a use at your own risk offer. I used 1/4" 1025 plate, if you are worried make it from somthing thicker/stronger. The mount should accomodate the size of an M style Warn or a Ramsey REP or profile type winch. I can snap another photo to show the location where the winch needs to sit as there is a cross member on the bottom of the box that the winch needs to sit in front of. If you can find the dimensions of your preferred winch I can take some measurements to see if it will fit.

Ok John you and your rear winch were soo on my mind as I accidentally pushed a 5 foot pile of snow over the top of a curb and then my front tires sunk 8 inches and got stuck for 45 minutes which just so happeneds to be the exact amount of time it takes to shovel through 5 feet of snow on both sides of my truck and clear out the undercarriage and free up the tires and pray to the olmighty to let me get out of this hole without going another foot forward because that would have landed me in a water runoff basin that of course was completly filled with water and well... ... ... ... ... ... . I need a winch.

My brother and I were out wheeling in my 1500 shown in thread above. I was on my quad, he was in my truck. Mistake number one. I am waiting up the trail for brother to show up which doesn't happen. I go back to find my truck partially submerged in a small pond, we are talking 8-10 inches of water in the cab, this with 35's and 3 inches of lift over and above the factory off road kit. The engine was still running but the rad fan sounds like a washing machine. The only winch is on front and the water only got deeper, no way to winch to the side. Mistake number two. Long story short, $4400 later truck is functioning normal again, lesson #1 - must not let brother drive truck; lesson #2 - must have winch on rear of truck. No less than 8 months after spending $4400, I write the truck off in roll over shown in link above, must be bad karma from my misspent youth.
