There has been multiple responses regarding two different FG fuel filters. Does anyone have more info on this? The local parts dealer here told me it's the same filter with a new part number. Who's right?

You can put synethic oil in now,I put mine in at 10,000 mi. on two different Dodge Ram's with Cummin's engines ,had no problem's. :)

The biggest problem TDR members face is dealing with those people who think they know it all. And I am sure you will agree that it is SO annoying to those of us that do... ... ... :D :D :D

Except for my AFE Filter, I'm stock, and I get 20 MPG around town. 65-70 = 25 MPG, 80 =21 MPG. I don't know what to tell the guys who aren't getting this mileage, but my 94 CTD got similar mileage also. Even when brand new, it got 18-19 around town. I've only got Synthetic rear-end fluid (75W-140).

P. S. I've 45K miles now.

:D Hmmmmmmmmm, doubting Thomas's out there for the fuel mileage of 21 to 24 mpg. I just got back in town from visiting the east coast for my 1st granddaughters birth. So I was not able to respond in a timely fashion. My last big trip I took to Idaho was in June. I fueled up in Willsonville, Oregon at the Shell station and my trip was up the 205 to 84 and out to Umitilla. From there we went up to Spokane and over Look Out Pass to Missoula Montanna. At Missoula we turned south down the bitterroot and crossed Lost Trail Pass and finally stopped in Salmon Idaho. The trip computer told me I was getting 22. 1 mpg. Having read the previous discussion on the reliability of the computer for accuracy, I toped the tank out till nary another drop would go in, just as I did in Willsonville. I stopped in Hamilton Montanna at the Chevron station and bought 4 gallons of fuel which was put into a container in the back of the truck cause the needle was on empty and I had about 80 miles to go. I asked the wife if she was ok with me trying this, to which she responded that she thought I was being a bit on the nutty side. We made it to Salmon with out any problems nor did we have to use the 4 gallons of fuel in the gas can that I bought for the just in case senerao. With my little handy dandy caculator and using the mileage from the odometer 715 mile (the gps said I traveled 734 miles) I did the math after filling the tank with 32. 062 gallons of fuel once again to the very top, the numbers came out to 22. 3. Yep, you betcha, the old computer is off!!!:D :D I'll live with it. If you use the GPS wich would account as another source of verification, the numbers work out to 22. 89. I would deem this really good considering the head wind in the gorge and two mountian passes of 7,000 + ft. The only mods I have to the engine is an EZ and Amsoil 15/w40 since 1500 miles. I have the receipts for the fuel and the log book to show and If anybody wants to ride with me on the same trip, they are welcome to come along next time I go. I plan on putting on a 4 inch exhaust. As far as injectors go, I suspect that when I put those on, my mileage will drop somewhat. But we will see. :D Gotta love these 6 speeds. Comming back the same route I took over, I was loaded down 9,000 + and my mileage dropped to 18/19 mpg. Course I was crusing alot faster comming back. If anyone doubts what I have written, give me a call and we will set a date to make the trip and you can see for your self. :D :D

Interesting!

Well:

First: it's real interesting to hear about the two oil filters.

Second: I think I need to install the one aftermarket device guaranteed to save fuel... the wood block in the the accelerator pedal. :D I once got 19. 1 going down hill on a cool day with a tail wind. I usually get 16 to nearly 18.

Finally, I keep a fuel/maint log on my truck. Getting about the same fuel mileage on completely stock truck up to 12K miles as I did with all BOMBING. Not bad, since I drive a little more aggresively with each upgrade. :D

First there are two fuel filters from Fleet Guard one about $9. 00 is a paper type element and the second about $15. 00 is a StrataPore micro media element the StrataPore is suppose to filter out smaller debrise from the fuel or so they say!

Now on the mpg thing my truck still all stock with allmost 28k gets around 15. 7 to 16,2 regularly. When I first Bought my truck in May of 2000 it got in the high 17 to 18 then I took the truck to the dealer to have the steering checked (they aligned and ballanced the tires better but still wanders:( ) and they reflashed the ecm and since then around 16mpg is all i get with mostly hyway driving allthough the hyway around here has a lot of up and down so i might be able to do better

4 inch exhaust

After I piped my 97 my fuel mileage went from 10 around town to 18 around town. SOOOOO much better. Sounds gooood too.

I bought a set of Splitfire spark plugs at around 5000 miles, been in the glove box for 6000 miles now. With 11,000 on the clock I can't see any difference. I don't see the big deal with these things! :D :D :D

* Ahem *

Errr, the best I've EVER gotten is 19. 1 with my 4:10 rear end truck. At 7300lbs I'm more than happy.

Well no wonder you do not see a difference. You are suspose to put them up your exaust pipe. DUGH!!!

:D :D :D

Get you parts from your dealer and your advice from the TDR website. Now it could be a coenkidink, But when I changed to Amzoil I noticed an immediate and consistent milage increase. It wasn't much, only1-1 1/2 mpg. Check out Geno's they sell stratapore filters cheaper than my local dealer.

Over a million miles using Shell Rotella? I'll keep using Shell Rotella. Read all about it in the latest TDR rag. Why even bother with synthetic?

I used to get 19. 5-20. 5mpg calculated at each fillup with my '98 12v 5spd 4. 10 in town. Now I'm getting 17. 5-18. 5 calculated at each fillup with my 01 auto/3. 54. If someone lives in a totally flat city and drives in suburban city traffic with 45mph mile long stretches and an occasional stop for a red light, I can imagine over 20mpg out of a 24v. I probably could with mine but I'm still intertained by an occasional launch just to hear it sing my favorite tune!

Sorry to disappoint anyone but the 4" exhaust didn't improve my mileage any noticable amount. But you've got to remember the sound of that Cummins talking thru a bigger pipe is worth something!
