been seriously thinking about putting a flatbed on my truck... the stock bed is trashed, I've always liked flatbeds, and with some locking toolboxes up front, I could put my stacks back on. :D

mainly wondering about how to mount the bed to the frame and how to recess a gooseneck ball. the headache rack and toolboxes, I think we can handle. but, the more detailed the better. can modify from there.

TIA,

Forrest

My gooseneck ball is on a peice of channel iron welded inbetween the frame rails of the flatbed. The top of the ball is setup about a 1/4" under the bed level. There usto be a flip open lid but I cut it off because it was a PITA.

Just wish it had some side rails around the edge. It isn't pretty when things fly off.

yeah, I was talkin' w/ my buddy, and he suggested the C chanel for the gooseneck ball... I probably won't put a lid on it... just a sunken hole... I could still haul flat stuff like plywood, drywall, etc. but wouldn't have to worry about building/messing with the trap door.

I think we're just gonna have to yank the bed and get to it

Call R&R Industries in Thayer, MO. at (417)264-7500. They are the company on the mudflap. They sell tractors, but they may also sell flatbeds and could tell you the brand they carry.

Forrest,

Are you looking for plans to build one yourself or looking for someone to buy from? Here's one to buy from. Sure you've heard of B&W

nah, we're lookin' to build one... steel is too easy to work with, and my buddy's got pretty much everything we need because he builds custom goosneck trailers. I'd just like some plans. I guess I just need to dive under some flatbed trucks and get some ideas! :p

Flatbeds

I see a lot of flatbeds here in the North Texas/DFW area manufactured by (JH MFG). Usually have the logo on the rear of the flatbed. I know your not looking for this kind of flatbed, but I kinda like the looks of some of the Highwayman flatbeds www.800toolbox.com

Thanks Tony, I'll look up JH, and see where they're located... I shoulda dove under that old dude's truck, but I didn't really get to thinking about it till after I got home.

those aluminum beds are SWEET, but I don't have the money for that, and I figure w/ a steel one, I can easily modify it in the future w/ my MIG welder... add permanent ratchet straps, hooks, toolboxes, etc. etc.

I got to looking more at my flatbed. Mine is pretty basic. It mounts upto the frame at the stock bed mounts with a spacer. The frame of the flatbed sits about an inch off the truck frame. Looks like it was made out of 2 4'x8' sheets of diamond tread. For rachet tie down straps it has pieces of channel iron about 8" long welded to the side of the bed. There about 2' apart (4 on each side). On the under side it has stringers that run out to the edge about 1'-2' apart.
