I did this at the same time I installed my O/H console. If you are doing just a mirror, it is a very, very easy project. There are three wires that come off the mirror - power, ground, and one wire to the reverse circuit.

You have an 01 so I can't help you with wire colors and location, but if you have a manual this will be very easy to figure out.

I picked up my mirror at a salvage yard for $5. Either the guy didn't notice it was a auto dimmer or he didn't care, because I gotta believe they would normally charge more for it.

A few hints - if you find a mirror at a salvage yard don't forget to get the connector. If you use a small gauge wire (OEM for the mirror was 22 AWG) you won't need to remove your headliner or A-Pillar cover. Just tuck the wires up in there.

I hope this helps,

Ryan

Replacing auto mirror with a manual one?

Sounds like the reverse installation would be even easier. I have a shell on my 1996, and it interferes with the auto dim. In other words, there has to be something with a huge spotlight right behind me for it to work automatically.

My '01. 5 came with the auto-mirror, but is useless, as the 4x4 sets up so high the mirror never changes unless another tall truck comes up behind with high beams on.

Has anyone tried taping a little piece of window tint or something like that over the forward light sensor to make the mirror more sensitive? I have noticed that the sun shining through the back window will not make the mirror darken unless I place my hand behind the mirror and block the other sensor.

I have to agree with Matt (above). I have my windowes tinted and it screws up the auto dim feature. Did the same on my last truck. I always tint so mirror is useless to me, but you have to get it with the computer.
