My son had 3. 73's, auto but with 35's in his 03 and I can't imagine going taller with those gears. I drove it coast to coast and out on the open road not towing proved pretty good for a trip like that but for everyday use I just don't see it.

Mine has 33's + auto and I tow 6K. When my tires wear out I am going back to 285/70's that are a tiny bit smaller just for towing.

Playing around with this calculator will show some interesting info.

Mine has 35's. It does ok. With the smarty it does really well. I haul about 1200 pounds of tools an air compressor in the bed always. I tow with it a pretty good bit. I do have to be easy on it when towing as the transmission will heat up pretty quik in town but it cools quickly on the road. Today I had to tow a backhoe about 20 miles on my gooseneck. Gross weight 32,775lbs. (Yeah, my trucks a 3/4ton). It was too heavy but it could be done but was far far far from ideal. If I had it to do over I would get the 4. 10s, as it is I'm going to go to a smaller tire.

My son has an 04 (37s 3. 73s auto) I borrowed it when my truck was down I tow around 10k flat road ok spent alot of time locked out of overdrive looks good but sucks towing oh and i put my Smarty on and that helped but with 37s I would want lower gears or a biult trans and alot more power I might be a little bias as I have more power and stock tires Randy

I did have 3. 73s with 37s and on the open road it was great. Towing sucked also spent a lot of time with od locked out. Switched to 4. 10s and that seems like the right combo for my use. I do miss the 3. 73s unloaded for high speeds though.

I love my 3:73's and 37's. How fast are you guys towing not to like it. I do not tow over 10K and at 1800 RPMs with the OD out I hit 78 MPH and get good mileage. I just have a Edge and it has all the power you could need. You only let it shift down if your EGTs get to high, maybe a Smarty and turbo would help that. My biggest problem with the 37s are spring wrap on take off and hard acceleration. If your towing over 10K I don't know why you would want a lifted truck.

Most states the max speed is 70mph or less with a trailer Oregon is 55mph if over 8k gvw yes I drive 65 in Oregon but if you hit any hills its a turd the rpms are just to low if you drive the speed limit empty its great. Back to the original question the trans run a trans temp gauge change the fluid every 12k hope for the best my sons truck(37s,3. 73) has 82k on the original trans my truck went 160k stock tires but always towing loaded 8to10k truck has 100hp injectors,62/14 turbo,Smarty I think the turbo was the final straw.
