You can't look at teh RV industry as a

safety standard- afterall they fight to make sure one doesn't have to be certified to drive a big class A - wouldn't want to keep someone from buying one would we..... and to think that they provide an attractive nuisance in a motorhome - because they are so convienent to walk around in... ... until something happens. Let's be honest - if you never get in an accident why do you need insurance, seat belts, airbags or any safety features? We all did things when we were kids that we don't do today. For example one of us wrote:



"I rode in a camper when I was a kid with no problems. "



You could say the same about Russian Roulette!



It took guts for Jackson to ask ... ... . I know it would be fun for the kids to ride there - heck I would if I were a kid - and it's great as long as the unexpected doesn't happen - and then - there is only oner person to blame - and it's not the kids.

Yes I rode in a slide in camper and in the back of a pickup with and without a shell as a kid and sure it was fun, back then no one gave it a second thought. I now have a fifth wheel. My wife and daughter would ride in the truck with me, once we had our 2nd daughter, the kids rode up front with me and she rode in the trailer a couple of times. She complained that it was too bouncy (she said that I hit a bump and bounced her off of the couch) and that the diesel exhaust would go into the trailer. After that, we got to thinking how that probably wasn't a smart thing to do for a few reasons: no seatbelts, exhaust fumes, toothpick construction, to name a few. One other thing to think about is that most of the trailers I have seen have the tables/chairs/couches over the wheel wells that are made of thin material. If the tread comes off of a tire, it would easily tear threw the wheel well and damage whatever or whoever is above the wheel well.

I decided to no longer have people in the trailer when driving. For the last couple of years, when camping, my wife would drive separately or one of our family would ride with whoever else was going with us if there was a seatbelt. We could not afford a new truck. Once I saw TDR issue 47, we got a mckinley custom conversion added to the truck. Now my 3 seat regular cab is a 6 seat extended cab.

I understand some people's comments in this thread getting very heated especially where kids are involved. I get very upset when you see kids in the backseat of a car (not to mention a camper) that are not in seatbelts or carseat and are crawling all over and the parents do nothing. As parents, we are responsible for everything that we subject our kids to and as a result must live with every decision we make in that regard, right or wrong. Believe me when I say that your children think that you are the greatest, please show them the same and keep them safe!

Just saw a collection jar at the bank for a little girl 2 years old with a terminal disease, and it really made think even more about this. Lives, especially our kids are so precious!! WHY RISK THEM FOR SOMETHING STUPID. I have no problem with riding MX, racing, etc... . but you are wearing protective gear.

I wont say the camper is safe, heck setting at the table in a class C can't be too safe either but where is everyone going to set in one of those?



Your post made me think that little girl would give just about anything to go for a ride in the camper. And I personally know 3 fellas that are dead and one a quadriplegic from dirt bikes yet I have never read about such tragic camper accidents till I read this thread. I don't know what to think about this tread, I feel terrible for the unfortunate camper accidents.
