I am looking at adding some sort of keyless entry with a remote and found a couple that state that it will work with all "central locking" vehicles. Does this mean if you have factory electric door locks?

I am wanting to add this to my 01 2500.

I did some searching and found where our trucks have the keyless feature but was never programmed at the dealer. Is this something that would be cheaper and factory? Anyone know the cost of two remotes and to have the dealer do it?

thanks.

I've had a Clifford system in mine for years, very happy with it. I would guess that, yes you would have to have elect. door locks.

I put a relatively cheap aftermarket kit in my '98. It did have electric locks. The kit tapped into wiring leading into each door. It was a bit of a job locating the right wires but not too bad. The kit included an alarm system and was pretty complete. I think it was "Valiant" brand.

Years ago, I added a kit to another car that didn't have electric locks. It included solenoids for the locks, etc. That one was a PIA but I ultimately got it done. Had to remove panels from the doors and run wires to them, etc.

I don't know if such kits are even available anymore.

I added a viper keyless entry to mine and it was pretty easy.

Here is a place to get the wiring diagram. It also tells you where the wire is located

BTackett,

I installed a Clarion Ungo SR6000 remote start, keyless entry, security system in my 2001 about 5 years ago. It was quite a project to install (took an entire weekend) but it works flawlessly. The kit comes with a long-range two-way pager remote and a regular one-way key fob remote. The street price these days is only about $150.

Besides the normal security system features you'd expect, I can remotely start the truck (yes... it waits for the WAIT-TO-START light to extinguish), turn the headlights on and off, roll the windows down or up in about 2" increments (for venting on a hot day), and keep the truck running for a set amount of minutes for turbo cool-down after removing the ignition key. It does even more stuff which I've forgotten about because I don't use them very often.

My truck came from the factory with electric door locks and power windows.

Best regards,

John L.

Thanks for the input. I printed off the wiring diagram so whatever system I go to I will have it.

Anyone know what is involved in the OEM keyless entry from a dealer? Anyone who has done it give some prices?

thanks.

If I was going to install a security system, I would use the after market. The oem does not allow key in ignition running and locked. At least when I was buying my truck.

Here in Louisiana it gets very hot during the summer. I like to set the alarm and leave it running while I run into the convience stores. The turbo does not cool down enough to safely shutdown the engine, IMO.

I have a viper. I didn't set the viper to do the fancy stuff like John's setup.

I would like to have a remote start that waited for the grid heater to cycle and keyless entry without having to deal with an alarm
