Diesel Freak has Line-X rockers...

I have seen it in person and it looks sweet! I don't think his mudrunner site has close-up pictures of his rockers though. I hope to do it in the future when I have the $$. My local Line-X dealer in Tacoma, WA wanted $900-1000. I think when the time comes, I'll drive down to Vancouver, WA where Diesel Freak had his done. They only want $650. Definitely worth the drive... . :D

Here's my original post on mine (from January):

I picked up my truck yesterday after it's surgery last week (I hit a deer a couple of weeks ago). Since they had to work on the rockers anyways I had the body shop fix any corrosion I had from paint chips (hundreds of them) and then had the local Permatech dealer spray from the body line down in a dark grey that is matched to the dark grey on the front bumper (VERY close match in color - not quite exact) and all of the exposed metal inside of the wheelwells in black. I had them spray all the way around the pinch welds on the bottom and all. Also once the fenderliners were removed (for spraying) I found that on BOTH sides of the truck in the front wheel wells toward the front that the liners had worn through the paint in an area about 2 inches in diameter and there was a lot of corrosion there - I had the body shop remove that corrosion too and had the liner place spray a very thin coat of the liner over that area so that it doesn't come back. Any of you guys that plan on keeping your truck for a long time may want to remove those front liners and fix that spot before it rots out the fender from the inside. From the side of the truck you can't even tell unless you look REALLY closely that the inside of the wheel wells is coated, looking straight down from the top of the truck it sticks out about 1/2 a millimeter is all - but that's enough that rocks won't be able to chip it! The body shop was extremely impressed and the manager there is going to have his truck done now too he liked it so much. Now I won't have to spend 20-30 minutes a month repairing chips around the wheel wells, pinch welds, and rockers!! WOOHOOO #ad

BTW, I haven't had to fix a SINGLE rock chip since last January when I had it done. A few things to consider, check out the installing dealer very carefully - ask for references on a couple of trucks that you can look at yourself to see how good of a job they did (the installer means more than the material used IMO). Next, make sure they know EXACTLY what you (where you want sprayed and where you don't) - my recommendation is to arrange to be at the shop when they are masking it off so it goes right the 1st time. Lastly, pick your color carefully. AFAIK permatech is the only manufacturer that mixes the entire material to the color that is to be sprayed. Others just paint over the top of their standard color - the difference there is if the surface get's gouged the solid one won't show, whereas the coated one will. Also, I'd recommend you make it two tone rather than trying to have one solid color from top to bottom. LSFARM had his rockers sprayed at the same shop I had mine done at but had them try to color match his intense blue paint job. Their first try was too light, they got very close on the second try - HOWEVER, it all depends on the lighting. Depending on the angle and the lighting it can look EXACTLY right or off by quite a bit - hard to explain. In my case I had them spray a darker grey that matches the lower bumper fascia so the color match didn't match as much (expecially since the driftwood rockers originally were WAY lighter than the bumper fascia - it's MUCH closer now). BTW, price was around $400 for LSFARM's application I believe.

glitchem had it done...

I know Curtis had it done and it looks good. His is a white dually, and the rockers are white also.

Thanx for the replies guys....

As for color, I was thinking that black stuff might not look too bad on a white truck.

What a joke....

I e-mailed a few Line-X dealers in my area for a rocker panels quote, and here was one response:

HI ROCKER PANELS ARE DONE FOR $900 AND WE WOULD NEED YOUR TRUCK FOR

THREE

DAYS

$900 and keep my truck for 3 days??  No thanks!

Steve: How long did they have your truck? 3 days seems excessive.

I won't be going to this place!

They only had my truck for a single day. It was delivered to them with the bumpers, wheel liners, and nerf bars already removed though - so they didn't have to do that part. I had a deer run into the side of the truck and damaged the bed and passenger side doors, the body shop just prepped the metal and then delivered it to the liner place, then picked it up the next morning and put the other stuff back on. BTW, I talked with lsfarm and he said he paid $450 for his and that was color matched - I think they charge an extra $50 for the color matching.

Take it to a body shop and ask them to spray the rockers with 3M rocker panel coating. It's a pliable undrecoating that you can paint the body color over. I've had mine since May and it still looks great. You can't tell unless your right up on the truck too.

I bought my 92 with some Bed-Liner stuff already painted on my lower Door molding section that runs the whole length of the truck. It did the job of protecting the body from chips and stuff, but what I didn't like was that some idiot pulled in front of me causing an accident. Then when the body man fixed my frontend and fender, he also tried touching up some of the other lower panels. He had a hell of a time trying to match the stuff or even paint over it. The thinner in his paint would make the Bed-Liner stuff get gooey and he would need to wait a day or 2 before trying to paint over it. Then it was coming out slightly brownish on my white truck until he laid on several coats. Everything finally came out OK? but not 100 % happy with it. I have decided to get rid of all of it and only sandblasting is what takes it off. At least I know that my rocker panels will be looking better then new when everything is all done. I am not sure what brand of Bed-liner the previous owner used on the truck. I would ask though about painting over it in the future if you happen to get into an accident or something. The newer stuff I'm sure is much better then a few years ago when mine was done.

It wouldn't work for me either, I was able to get to it by going to his homepage http://www.geocities.com/cdaledh and then clicking on the picture. Crazy thing is that the link still doesn't work for me although the address looks right - try this link #ad

I had my rockers done front to back, from the back of the front wheel well to the back bumper, including the small piece in the back, behind the bumper, where the crank is for the spare tire. It was done by LineX, and they charged $400 for the bed, and another $200 for the rocker panels. It was done at LineX in Toledo. It will be 2 years in February that it was done, and I am extremely pleased with the results. I had them spray it black, to contrast with the intense blue. Unfortunately, I don't have any way to download some of the pictures I have of the truck. I would not hesitate to have it done again !

My 2cents.

I priced having it done and ended up buying the bed-liner roll-on kit by Dupli-Color from Kragen Auto. Pull your bumpers then wash and scuff-sand the area and do it yourself for about $40. 00. Tip: the same high-nap rollers are available for a lot less at home improvement stores. Mine has been on for about two years and seems pretty bullet-proof especially since I drive a lot of gravel/dirt roads at work.

Hope this helps, Jones

Far as I know, I was one of the first members to get this done when I bought the truck (and way prior to re-registering with a new handle)... ... . I went with Line-X, front to rear, and had it painted black to match the truck. The Line-X is just flexible enough, that rocks DO NOT chip the paint. Weird. You can drive on a gravel road all day, and the gravel doesn't chip the black paint. Of course, the Line-X is black, but if you look real close, there are NO chips.

Shop around: I took it in the shorts by the LineX shop for the rockers, and paid quite a bit for the paint. At that time, I couldn't find anyone who would do it other than this one shop. Now, it appears commonplace. I am happy to post pics if you'd like... ... .

I highly recommend having this done, if you can get coating and paint for a reasonable price.
