4 cyl Cummins in a Dakota

I want to know if any one has swapped an eaton 6 or 9 speed into a second gen ram 3500 2wd. Any one got any other transmission swap ideas for my truck this is the fourth nv4500hd in the first 100k. I plan on running this truck forever! if the dodge around the cummins holds up. It would still have origal clutch if the 4500 had not leaked all over the disc  I don't want to swap in the 5600.

any ideas would be great

Thank you

p. s I need overdrive other wise I would put in an

allison

First, welcome to the website.

What are you doing to cause 4 NV4500s to fail in less than 100k? Something sounds fishy:D And it ain' t the gear oil.

Allison and Brown-Lipe

A couple of years ago, hot-shotter, LargeCar, installed a 4 speed Allison along with a little Brownie or Brown-Lipe aux. 3 speed transmission to gain a overdrive. Last I knew it was working great.

Also, check the 911 forum, MDM posted about the same conversion a few days ago.

That would be nice... an Allison and an Aux..... good luck mating that to a transfer case..... the front driveshaft would be longer than the rear... almost like a divorced t-case setup.

Has anyone looked into the Clark 5-speeds? I called them a few years back about a 5-speed to go behind my 440. They had several different choices for overdrive ratio and were bolt in, just shorten driveshaft.

The Clark trannies are used on medium duty trucks like our motors were designed for.

Matt,

I had read an article in Off Road or some 4x4 mag. The Clark will handle tons more torque than the New Process 4-speed I had at the time, which means it would be even more of an upgrade for you guys with the 5-speed gearboxes. They claim the shifts are a little sluggish just like a big truck. I called a rep in Florida(I don't have the number anymore)and priced it. It was about $3,000 but don't quote me. The overdrive ratio options would make it a nice transmission for this motor. Won't do me any good since I've got a slushbox but might help some of you.

Steve,

I've read about Clark conversions in 4wd magazines, Petersen's

I think. The article said that only the 280VO has an overdrive 5th.

The input shaft is 1 1/2" ten spline, so it would take a custom

built clutch hub. I talked to a shop in Mississippi that offered

one rebuilt, with all necessary changeover parts for $2,150

about a year ago. But he thought I'd like an enhanced NV4500

better? I thought they(Clark) would be a good choice if you

couldn't tear one up in a medium truck, but maybe there are

some driveability questions for LT applications?

I'll look for the guy's name & phone # if you're interested.

Steve,

The words "overdrive options" make me happy. This might be THE answer for the ultimate towing setup... . nothing against slushboxes... . but I think it would be cool to have a beefy manual transmission that could take the beating a little better than the NV's...

Matt

I won't argue a bit Matt. If I did a lot of towing I would prefer to have a beefy manual over the auto. Most of my driving is empty so the auto suits me fine, plus no loss of boost between shifts.

Mel, thanks but won't do me any good, I have an auto. I was just bringing up the subject for these manual guys.

Spicer 7 speed

A few years ago I remenber getting a four -wheel and off road in the mail. There was a guy in their that had a lifted one ton dually extended cab with a spicer 7speed. It said all he had to do was change the bellhousing and make new cross members fot the trans. We have an International 8100 dump truck here at my place that has the L-10 cummins with a spicer 7 speed. They also could have come with the 9 speed. Hope this helps you in some way.

Any and all options for replacing the NV4500 or 5600 are a good thing in my book.

We are making class-8 truck power and putting it through a LT transmission..... and some of us get upset when it breaks..... such is life.

Listing information for other alternatives on this thread would be a good idea..... it would make it easier for folks looking to swap in a manual transmission..... in the future... . myself included.

Matt - My theory: "If you don't want it to break, throw all kinds of $$$$ at it until it doesn't break anymore. "

Thought I would throw in my opinion on the alternative transmission issue. In a conversion I did we used a Spicer 3053A OD 5-speed. It is a 2-wheel drive, but Rockwell builds a transfer case for you 4-wheel drive guys. The transmission is for Military 6x6 trucks with the multi-fuel engine. You have to use a #3 bell housing. Anyway this is just my second post to the TDR,so I thought I would let you all know you guys are a great source of info...
