Alot of the people on this site (my self included) have made the decision for 4x4.

BUT you are absolutly correct in your observance. 4x4 has a lot of draw backs if you do not require it.

I learned to drive in a Chevy p/u 235ci 3 sp and 4:57 rear gears. I went every where with it. I got it stuck and I got it out. I also learned how to drive off road with it.

I put 265,000 mile on an another 2x 79Chevy 488ci 420hp, t400, 3. 73 posi. I could best most of the smart-alecs with their 4x4s.

If it is not a requirement in your lifestyle don't add the agravation.

As the elders in my village used to say:"better to have it and never need it then

to need it once and not to have it"... or sometting like it... kinda like owning a gun i guess... ... ..... joe

I wound up with a 4wd simply because I bought used and found a truck in exceptional shape, just like I wanted it (12 valve :) ) Thankfully I have recently found a more ;) "practical" use for 4wd, I call it "4 wheel positrac" :p

My family and another family took a camping trip over Memorial day weekend 2001. We didn't plan ahead and ended up wondering all over the place looking for a campground. I was following a fellow TDR member and we ended up on this narrow, silty, dirt road winding up the side of a mountain looking for a spot (we were both pulling travel trailers too). I was very happy to have 4wd then (I would not have wanted to back down!) and I swore after that I would never buy another truck without it.

I'd just as soon cut off my left you know what as live without 4wd! According to the latest truck trends article on the '03's 70% of Ram 2500/3500's sold are 4wd. I have at least 5,000 of my 100,000 miles in 4wd with 200 or so in 4w-lo. My top reasons to have 4wd in your 2500/3500 Ram:

1. To NEVER get stuck on grass at the campground with your trailer (I end up seeing someone with 2wd get stuck almost every time it rains at a campground)

2. When it snows hard and people get off the roads just put it in 4wd and enjoy the empty roads and easy drive

3. You can run good sized off road tires on it stock (no lift needed :) )

4. When you have a friend that just swapped a "indestructible" Dana 44 into his truck you can show him your stock Dana 60 and smile :D

5. Easier to work on the undercarriage, just slide under - no need to put it on jack stands
