If you purchased a 'puter from any of the 'big names', there should be a tag on it with the original XP product key. With that key, you should be able to borrow just about any copy of XP and re-install XP. But the 'puter should have come with XP install disks or, at the least, system restore disks. If it didn't, bring it back to the store and tell them to fix it. If it was mail order, just about all of the major players will assist you in restoring the system without having to ship it anywhere.
been there, done that... my other pc had xp mce 2005 installed on it. . well virus and spyware nailed me bad and i dug through all the stuff that came with the mdg pos and no where was a xp cd. . so i called them and complained about that and requested a replacment disk. nothing happened, then i started calling 2-5 times daily then finally they send me a disk. i think great, i can fix my nfg pc. . open the package, and find a xp home 2003 disk in there. . so the calls 5-7 times a day start, and 2 weeks later i finally got a proper copy of xp mce 2005... what a pain in the arse. and i was sad that i could not find an unmolested copy of xp mce on any torrent server. i have a valid license key so all i needed was a disk to do the reinstall, but all i could find was the cracked versions

Evidently the key was sent and one of the error codes was that the key was already in use according to Microsoft. This must have happened before the first reboot. Do you think if I put the disc back in and ask for a new upgrade from the disc that my problem may be solved?
i don't know how it is on vista, but for xp, i have had to call MS 2 times already for my other pc to allow me to keep using my license key. . i end up reformatting that pc 2 times a year as i am not the only user. on my other pc, i am the only user and i have never had to yet do a reformat on it [and i'd need to get a ½TB external hd to hold all the junk on my drives that i don't want to loose during reformat]
