LIVE & LEARN

I had 3 1500 Dodge gasoline trucks before I purchased my 04 diesel. I had never got stuck with my 1/2 ton trucks, but the first time I went down the same road at the hunting camp with my new shiney 3/4 ton diesel, I sank up to the front bumper.

I was pulled out by my brother-in-law with a little wimp *** Nissan truck with four wheel drive.

I was now educated on heavy diesel trucks with street tires.

What an embrassement.

One of the things I don't like about my Dodge is the delay in the vacuum lock 4X4. I had the exact same thing happen to me when I first bought mine back in 98, when I started to loose traction I reached down & pulled it into 4X high & gassed it (or Dieseled it). But guess what, I was stuck before the front engaged & when it finally did engage it just dug me in deeper!!! If there wasn't a delay in the time it takes to lock in most of the time you wouldn't get stuck!

But I've learned that if it looks questionable at all, lock it in first.

That's one thing I don't miss about my 2nd Gen! It's also the reason I opted for the manual tranfer case instead of electronic. I want to know that when I throw it in 4x4 it's locked NOW.

When I purchased my truck new, just a little over a year ago. It was essentially a no-brainier to go with 4WD & the Anti-Spin rear differential. I have even used my truck on occasion to free a couple various stuck vehicles hear & there, each time it’s been with ease and while I’m still able to be on solid ground or pavement. I just want to know what the 4wd is technically supposed to be for in a 2500/3500 series diesel? My truck sucks in snow, this past winter I almost got stuck just pulling off the road in some very light snow. That “Anti-Spin” will not send power to the wheel with the most traction unless the truck is already rolling, but if you are starting from a dead stop, then you’ve got a one-wheel wonder. Again almost losing my truck to the lake last summer, was not fun, while launching from the dirt launch, again this is a very smooth hardly any sloop launch, but my truck still almost got stuck while other truck managed with ease. I guess it just take refined skill to master the art of using 4-wheel-drive in a 3/4 ton 1-ton Truck. I which someone would make a truck about the size of a Tacoma-Crew Cab-Longbed and fit it with a Cummins 4BT and selectable locking FR/RR differentials and a manual trans.

oh yea not in my 03 4x4 yet but my 90 found out the hard way the hubs where not working. they would lock in drive shaft turn but the gear was froze up. 85 4x4 gas jobbie, had a yard that when it rained the truck would sink up to the axles!!!!! friends 81 chevy with 38's had to lock it in.

I think there are two different ways of pulling someone out. IF you have ever been really stuck and needed to snatch someone out then you definately need to have a synthetic tow strap to get that vehicle out. One these large trucks the energy that is put on them can be upwards of 20k lbs. A chain is not made for that kind of strength and will break but I have seen them just lay down. They will not whip.

I got my '99 stuck really bad one day long ago. I slowly got pulled out by a Toyota 4Runner :{ . He still gives me a hard time every now and then when that day comes to mind. I know if I had mud tires, I would have just driven out, but the stockers were worthless!

A buddy just bought his 02 CTD quad cab short bed 4x4 stock tires... . went to a friends house they were building and level ground..... pulled upto the house fine but backing up he sunk into a soft spot from a tile trench. I told him to get on the go pedal and get past the obvious disturbed ground..... did he listen NOPE haha :-laf so our friend got his 96 chev long bed gasser to pull us out.

My story... . I was plowing snow and tring to push a pile back to make room fore more snow. I was getting after it pretty hard and the plow raised up with the pile, well my momentum pushed me up the pile a little bit as well. I tried to back up and the front end just sunk in the snow. there I sat snow packed behind the plow, around the tires, axel etc... I could rock it but the tires spun and instant ice under the tires. There I was looking like a professional snow removal company stuck..... not good! Killed the strobes and called a friend. ol 98 12v 4x4 came and gave me the extra umph I needed to get out.

ASchwartz My truck looked exactly like yours did on that job site. Well guys, you keep saying get some better tires. Last Summer a couple of friends and I took my buddy's 24ft Centurion out to the lake. Well the paved launch was full and the Park Ranger said they opened the dirt launch if we wanted to use it. I get over to the dirt launch and here is a 2003-ish Lexus LX470 I think it was?? It had a 22ft Mastercraft behind it, dropped the boat and pulled out of the muddy launch without spinning a tire. I luanched from the same spot, as soon as I dumped the boat into the lake, I pulled forward with just the empty trailer and started to spin tires, If I didn't put my foot to the floor I would have been fetching my truck from the lake. I learned that lesson and ditched my factory BFG Rugged-Trail 265 series tires for the highly reviewed BFG All-Terrain T/A Ko and a few weeks later Launched from about the same spot, no problem and a lot better traction. These are the same tires I have today, they have about 80% tread left and should be more than adequate. What better tire can I get in a 285 series than won't ride like a dump truck?

I am glad it's not just me. . Mud is not my problem, but I have been stuck in deep snow 3-4 times since I have had it. My cousins half ton chevy and brother in laws 1/2 ton dodge just go right by me. .

I am certain weight is an issue, but the tires are a huge problem. Would love BFG All Terrain TAs, but as someone mentioned no load range E... Does anyone make a load range E with some bite?

I have considered backing down to load range D's but when I tow I am almost at my GVWR. .

BFG Commercial TAs look good, but they only come in a 16" rim...

Yep, been there done that...

Rather embarressed to have the same guy with the same small JD tractor have to pull me out of the same field two years in a row... (I've never been stuck since, then again I have my own tractor now. That's my story and I'm stuck with it... )

Our nice engine weight and stock tires is a recipe for a tow.

My transfer case is all but worn out from having to drive in 4x4 most of the winter since the LS rear just loves to walk off on ice due to the high berm in our dirt roads...

But I still love the ole beast!!!

Got my 03 with the stock Mich265's stuck in a farmers field while getting hay. Purchased BFG's 285's much better off road tire.

Gotta remember the front of this truck is HEAVY... stock tires and high psi means quick sinking if the dirt is hard on top but soggy underneath... some vehicles can drive right over it, but unless you get bigger tires you run the risk of breaking through. Here's the one that got me:

Dude you gota tell that story! did you mean to or what

Yeah, it's a good thing it was a friendly cop. He said he had just been stuck in the mud in his cruiser chasing some perps across a soccer field at the park. Turns out he's a fellow 4-wheeler and he had a good sense of humor... I was thinking "destruction of public property" when he first pulled up! :-laf

BTW, this is the reason I have AAA Plus membership even tho my insurance isn't through them. $79/yr... sometimes I never use it, but this free extraction would have cost me a couple hundred bucks... and for some reason I seem to be a magnet for these kinds of events!

I got stuck the first time going to glamis with my new truck and trailer the 4x4 was no help. My last truck (overheating DMAX) would pull thru the same glamis sand with out airing down at all. And I would not take my new baby in the mud I got a old cucv for that it gets stuck too but thats the fun in wheelin #ad

Looks like something that would happen to me. Not sure I would want to capture the moment on film... cop and all. Ouch. At least you didn't have to hike far to get a tow out :-laf
